Offshore oil and gas is quietly replacing vessel days with subsea robots
Resident subsea robots, autonomous inspection vehicles and remotely operated uncrewed vessels are beginning to perform offshore oil and gas work once tied to large support vessels and offshore crews. Commercial operations involving Equinor, Saipem, Reach Subsea and Oceaneering International show how robotics could reduce vessel days, personnel exposure and inspection costs, although intervention capability, subsea infrastructure, communications and regulatory acceptance still determine how far vessel-free operations can go.
