Sodium-ion batteries: Why grid storage could become the chemistry’s first major market
Sodium-ion batteries are moving from demonstration projects toward gigawatt-hour-scale commercial commitments as CATL, Peak Energy, General Motors and major storage integrators target electricity grids, data centres and selected transport applications. The chemistry offers strong cold-weather performance and less exposure to lithium, but lower energy density, a China-heavy supply chain and falling lithium iron phosphate battery costs mean sodium-ion still has to prove that its system-level economics can beat an extraordinarily mature incumbent.
