Robinhood Markets company profile: How free trading became a crypto, banking and prediction-markets platform

Robinhood Markets, Inc. has expanded far beyond commission-free stock trading into options, cryptocurrency, retirement, banking, credit cards, managed portfolios, prediction markets, tokenized assets and artificial intelligence-assisted investing. Record second-quarter 2026 revenue shows the diversification strategy gaining traction, but a demanding valuation, regulatory risks and continued exposure to trading cycles leave investors asking whether Robinhood can become a durable financial super-app.

Robinhood Markets, Inc. (Nasdaq: HOOD) is a United States financial technology company offering retail brokerage, options and futures trading, cryptocurrency services, retirement accounts, investment advisory products, credit cards, digital banking services and access to emerging financial products including prediction markets and tokenized assets.

Founded in 2013 by Vladimir Tenev and Baiju Bhatt, Robinhood became one of the most disruptive forces in retail brokerage by popularizing commission-free stock trading through a mobile-first platform. The model helped attract millions of younger investors and ultimately contributed to a broader industry shift in which major United States brokerages eliminated commissions on many equity trades.

That original proposition now represents only part of the Robinhood business model. Under Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Vlad Tenev, Robinhood is attempting to become a much broader financial platform spanning investing, trading, saving, borrowing, retirement, credit, banking, wealth management, digital assets and increasingly artificial intelligence-driven financial services.

The financial scale behind that transformation has expanded rapidly. Robinhood reported record second-quarter 2026 net revenue of $1.31 billion, up 32% from the previous year, while net income increased 48% to $573 million. Funded customers reached 28.4 million, total platform assets climbed to $369 billion and quarterly net deposits reached a record $21.7 billion.

Robinhood also said 13 of its businesses had reached at least $100 million in annualized revenue, an important indication that the company is becoming less dependent on a single trading product. However, transaction activity still represents a significant part of revenue, while newer businesses introduce additional regulatory, credit, cybersecurity and execution risks.

The investment question surrounding Robinhood has consequently changed. Investors are no longer simply asking whether commission-free trading can produce sustainable profits. They are asking whether Robinhood can successfully convert a large, highly engaged customer base into a global financial ecosystem capable of competing across multiple areas traditionally dominated by banks, brokerages, cryptocurrency exchanges and wealth managers.

How did Robinhood Markets transform commission-free trading into a broader financial platform?

Robinhood was created around the premise that financial markets should be easier and cheaper for ordinary investors to access. Its simplified interface, fractional-share capabilities and elimination of traditional trading commissions helped lower barriers that had historically discouraged younger or smaller investors from opening brokerage accounts.

The company’s growth accelerated dramatically during the pandemic-era retail-investing boom. Increased household savings, stimulus payments, market volatility and widespread interest in technology stocks, options, cryptocurrency and so-called meme stocks brought millions of customers onto digital investment platforms.

Robinhood’s July 2021 initial public offering turned the company into a publicly traded financial institution and subjected its business model to considerably greater scrutiny. Regulators, lawmakers and investors questioned issues ranging from payment for order flow and customer-protection controls to system reliability and Robinhood’s handling of periods of extreme trading activity.

The company has since invested heavily in broadening its operations beyond basic brokerage. Customers can now use Robinhood for equities, options, futures, event contracts, cryptocurrency, retirement savings, professionally managed investment portfolios, margin lending, credit cards and banking-related services.

Robinhood Gold has become an important distribution layer across these products. Meanwhile, acquisitions such as Bitstamp, WonderFi and TradePMR have extended Robinhood into international cryptocurrency infrastructure and professional wealth management.

The strategy is straightforward in concept but difficult in execution. Robinhood wants customers who begin by buying stocks or cryptocurrencies to eventually hold a larger percentage of their financial lives inside the platform.

How does Robinhood make money if stock trading remains commission-free?

Robinhood’s business model combines transaction-based revenue, net interest income and recurring or service-based revenue generated across its growing suite of financial products.

Transaction-based revenue remains the largest contributor. Robinhood receives payments from market makers for routing customer equity and options orders, earns rebates and related revenue from cryptocurrency activity, and generates commissions or fees through futures and event contracts.

During the second quarter of 2026, transaction-based revenue increased 44% year over year to $776 million. Options generated $342 million, equities produced $129 million and event contracts and other transaction products contributed $156 million.

Cryptocurrency was a notable exception. Crypto transaction revenue fell 38% to $100 million, demonstrating the continuing cyclicality of digital-asset activity. Robinhood nevertheless produced record overall quarterly revenue because strength in options, equities, prediction markets, net interest income and other businesses offset the cryptocurrency decline.

Net interest revenue reached $389 million during the quarter. Robinhood earns interest through customer margin loans, cash balances, securities lending, cash-sweep arrangements and credit-related activities.

Other revenue reached $143 million, up 54%, supported by Robinhood Gold subscriptions and newer businesses.

This expanding revenue mix is strategically important. Robinhood remains sensitive to periods of unusually strong or weak market activity, but the business is gradually gaining income streams that do not depend exclusively on customers repeatedly placing stock trades.

Why are prediction markets becoming such an important Robinhood growth engine?

Prediction markets have emerged as one of Robinhood’s fastest-growing businesses. Event contracts allow customers to trade on measurable outcomes relating to economic data, political events, sporting competitions and other events.

Robinhood reported more than 13.6 billion event contracts traded during the second quarter of 2026, representing more than ten times the volume recorded a year earlier.

The company is expanding its infrastructure through Rothera, a joint venture with Susquehanna International Group. Rothera operates a Commodity Futures Trading Commission-regulated exchange and clearinghouse following the acquisition of MIAXdx. Robinhood reported that more than 3.5 billion contracts had already traded through the venture by the time it released its second-quarter results.

Prediction markets offer an attractive engagement opportunity because customer activity does not have to depend on conventional equity or cryptocurrency-market volatility. Major elections, sporting events and economic announcements can themselves create trading demand.

However, this is not a regulatory risk that exists only in theory. Robinhood has disclosed litigation and enforcement disputes involving event contracts as authorities debate the boundary between federally regulated derivatives and activities potentially subject to state gambling laws.

Prediction markets could become a substantial long-term Robinhood business, but their future economics will depend partly on how courts and regulators define the permissible scope of these products.

Can Robinhood Gold, banking and credit cards reduce dependence on active traders?

Robinhood Gold is increasingly becoming the membership layer connecting customers with the wider Robinhood ecosystem.

Gold subscribers reached a record 4.8 million during the second quarter of 2026, increasing by approximately 1.4 million from the previous year. Gold penetration reached around 17% of funded customers, while Robinhood said approximately 40% of newly funded customers joined Gold during the quarter.

The growing subscription base is important because Gold customers can be offered additional products including higher-yield cash services, retirement incentives, research features, margin benefits and credit products.

Robinhood Gold Card has also become a meaningful business. The card crossed one million customers and generated more than $17 billion in annualized purchase volume. Robinhood said the credit-card business itself had exceeded $100 million in annualized revenue.

The company has also introduced a higher-tier Platinum Card as it attempts to deepen its relationship with wealthier customers.

Robinhood Banking had attracted more than $3 billion of customer deposits from over 240,000 funded customers by the end of June 2026, with approximately 40% of participating customers enrolled in direct deposit.

The direct-deposit figure is particularly relevant strategically. A customer who directs salary payments into the Robinhood ecosystem is potentially establishing Robinhood as a primary financial relationship rather than simply maintaining an account for occasional investing.

Robinhood should nevertheless be described as offering digital banking services rather than as a conventional bank. Some services rely on regulated banking partners, and expansion into credit and deposit-related products introduces additional compliance, fraud and credit risks.

How are Robinhood Strategies and TradePMR expanding the company into wealth management?

Robinhood is also attempting to retain customers as their financial needs become more sophisticated.

Robinhood Strategies provides managed portfolios for customers who want professional portfolio construction rather than managing every investment themselves. The service had attracted more than 300,000 funded customers and nearly $2 billion in assets under management by the second quarter of 2026.

The acquisition of TradePMR expanded the company further into professional advisory infrastructure. TradePMR provides technology and custody services used by independent registered investment advisers.

Robinhood said TradePMR and the Robinhood Advisor Network had reached approximately $50 billion in assets under management.

This initiative could address an important long-term challenge. Many customers who originally joined Robinhood as younger self-directed traders will eventually accumulate more wealth and require retirement planning, diversified portfolios and professional advice.

If Robinhood cannot provide those services, customers could gradually transfer assets to traditional wealth managers. Building an advisory ecosystem gives Robinhood another opportunity to keep those assets within its broader platform.

The difficulty is maintaining Robinhood’s technology-led operating model while entering a segment where customers often expect more personalized and service-intensive relationships.

Why do Bitstamp, Bitbuy and Coinsquare matter to Robinhood’s cryptocurrency strategy?

Cryptocurrency remains strategically important to Robinhood even though crypto transaction revenue weakened sharply during the second quarter.

Robinhood completed its acquisition of Bitstamp in June 2025, adding an established global cryptocurrency exchange serving retail and institutional customers.

Bitstamp accounted for approximately $22 billion of Robinhood’s $40 billion in total cryptocurrency notional volume during the second quarter of 2026. Crypto volume conducted directly through the Robinhood application was approximately $18 billion.

The acquisition therefore gives Robinhood significantly broader cryptocurrency activity than its consumer application alone would suggest. It also added institutional connectivity and a network of international regulatory licences and registrations.

Robinhood expanded further into Canada through its acquisition of WonderFi, completed in June 2026. WonderFi added the regulated Canadian cryptocurrency platforms Bitbuy and Coinsquare together with approximately 300,000 funded customers.

The transaction helped push Robinhood’s international funded-customer base above one million.

These acquisitions support Robinhood’s ambition to become a global cryptocurrency platform serving both retail and institutional customers. They also increase the complexity of the company’s regulatory obligations because cryptocurrency rules covering trading, custody, anti-money-laundering controls and customer protection differ significantly between jurisdictions.

Robinhood’s second-quarter results nevertheless demonstrated one benefit of diversification. Cryptocurrency revenue declined materially, but overall company revenue still reached a record because other businesses performed strongly.

What are Robinhood Chain and tokenized stocks supposed to achieve?

Robinhood’s blockchain strategy represents one of its most ambitious attempts to build financial infrastructure rather than merely distribute third-party products.

The company launched the public mainnet of Robinhood Chain in July 2026. Robinhood describes the platform as a permissionless, artificial intelligence-native Ethereum Layer 2 blockchain designed to support financial services and real-world asset tokenization.

The company also introduced new Stock Tokens for eligible users through Robinhood Wallet in more than 120 countries, subject to jurisdictional restrictions.

The legal structure of these products is important. Robinhood’s new Stock Tokens are tokenized debt securities issued by Robinhood Assets Jersey Limited. They are designed to provide economic exposure to underlying securities, but holders do not receive legal or beneficial ownership of the shares represented by those instruments.

Someone holding a Robinhood Stock Token linked to a publicly traded company therefore does not directly become a shareholder of that underlying company.

Robinhood also distinguishes these products from earlier Classic Stock Tokens offered through its European platform, so the two structures should not be treated as interchangeable.

If Robinhood Chain gains adoption, the company could benefit from increased transaction activity, tokenization services and greater control over the infrastructure supporting its international digital-asset products. The strategy could also create additional exposure to smart-contract vulnerabilities, cybersecurity threats, liquidity problems and evolving securities regulation.

Is artificial intelligence becoming a real Robinhood product category?

Artificial intelligence has moved beyond being an internal productivity tool within Robinhood and is beginning to appear directly in customer-facing investment products.

Robinhood launched Agentic Trading for equities and options in May 2026, allowing eligible customers to connect artificial intelligence agents to dedicated trading accounts operating within customer-defined parameters. The company subsequently announced an expansion of agentic capabilities into cryptocurrency.

By the second-quarter results, nearly 100,000 Agentic Trading accounts had been opened, with more than $100 million in assets under custody.

The concept could differentiate Robinhood from traditional retail brokerages by enabling software agents to monitor markets, analyze information and execute certain strategies continuously.

However, autonomous or semi-autonomous financial decision-making introduces substantial risk. Artificial intelligence models may misinterpret information, operate on outdated data, misunderstand customer instructions or execute trades differently from what users intended.

Robinhood consequently needs to demonstrate that Agentic Trading can produce sustained customer adoption without creating unacceptable compliance, suitability or operational problems.

The early $100 million asset figure remains small relative to Robinhood’s total platform assets of $369 billion. Agentic Trading should therefore be viewed as an emerging product category rather than a material earnings contributor at this stage.

What do Robinhood’s Q2 2026 results reveal about profitability?

Robinhood’s second-quarter 2026 financial performance demonstrated substantial operating momentum.

Total net revenue increased 32% to a record $1.31 billion, while net income rose 48% to $573 million. Adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization increased 35% to $741 million.

Diluted earnings reached $0.62 per share.

Those profit figures include an important accounting benefit. Robinhood recognised approximately $129 million in gains primarily related to the deconsolidation of Robinhood Ventures Fund I, contributing approximately $0.14 to diluted earnings per share.

The underlying operating metrics nevertheless remained strong. Funded customers increased 7% to 28.4 million, average revenue per user increased 24% to $187 and total platform assets rose 32% to $369 billion.

Retirement assets climbed 82% to $34.5 billion, while Robinhood’s margin book increased 127% to a record $21.6 billion.

Operating expenses rose 33% to $734 million as Robinhood continued investing in marketing, acquisitions, new product development and international expansion.

The company also announced a workforce restructuring in June 2026 affecting around 10% of full-time employees, equivalent to approximately 290 positions based on its previously reported workforce. Robinhood said the restructuring was intended to simplify organizational layers and improve operating efficiency.

Management subsequently lowered and tightened its 2026 outlook for adjusted operating expenses and share-based compensation to between $2.675 billion and $2.775 billion, compared with a previous range of $2.7 billion to $2.825 billion that had excluded Rothera and WonderFi.

Why did Robinhood raise $2.2 billion through convertible notes?

Robinhood completed a $2.2 billion offering of convertible senior notes due in 2029 during June 2026, giving the company additional capital for investment, acquisitions and general corporate purposes.

The notes carry a 0.00% stated coupon, meaning Robinhood does not make regular cash-interest payments under the conventional structure of interest-bearing debt.

The company nevertheless incurred approximately $30.6 million of issuance costs that are being amortized through interest expense, resulting in an effective accounting interest rate of approximately 0.43%.

Robinhood received approximately $2.17 billion in net proceeds from the offering after discounts and expenses.

Around $290 million was used to repurchase approximately 2.7 million Class A shares, while $123.2 million was spent on capped-call transactions designed to reduce potential dilution if the notes are converted into equity.

Cash and cash equivalents stood at approximately $5.4 billion at the end of the second quarter.

The financing therefore gives Robinhood considerable flexibility without creating significant near-term cash-interest expense. It still creates a future maturity obligation and potential equity dilution depending on Robinhood’s share price and conversion activity.

The decision to raise substantial capital despite strong profitability also indicates that management intends to continue investing aggressively rather than shift toward a more conservative capital-return strategy.

What does the HOOD share price reveal about investor sentiment in August 2026?

Robinhood shares closed at $93.65 on August 7, 2026, giving the company a market capitalization of approximately $84.2 billion.

The stock remained substantially below its 52-week high of $153.86 but comfortably above the 52-week low of $63.52.

Robinhood’s quoted price-to-earnings ratio was approximately 40 times, illustrating the significant growth expectations already incorporated into HOOD’s valuation.

That valuation is critical when assessing investor sentiment. Robinhood is no longer priced like a distressed or experimental retail-brokerage platform. The market is assigning substantial value to expectations that the company can continue expanding customer assets, cross-selling products and developing meaningful businesses in banking, credit, wealth management, cryptocurrency and prediction markets.

The recent share performance nevertheless shows that investors are prepared to punish disappointment even when headline financial numbers remain strong. Concerns about slowing cryptocurrency revenue, regulatory risks surrounding prediction markets and the sustainability of high-growth transaction businesses can quickly affect sentiment.

This creates an unusual investment profile. Robinhood’s underlying business is significantly stronger and more diversified than it was several years ago, but its valuation also leaves less room for execution errors.

What are the biggest risks facing Robinhood through 2027?

Robinhood’s most fundamental risk remains exposure to customer trading activity. Options, equities, cryptocurrency, futures and event-contract revenue can all fluctuate depending on market volatility, asset prices and retail-investor engagement.

Payment for order flow is another continuing regulatory exposure. Robinhood receives substantial transaction revenue from market makers, and future changes to United States market-structure rules could affect the economics of this activity.

Prediction markets present their own legal uncertainty as regulators and courts determine how different event contracts should be classified.

Cryptocurrency expansion introduces regulatory, custody and cybersecurity risks across multiple jurisdictions. Robinhood must integrate Bitstamp, Bitbuy, Coinsquare and its broader digital-asset infrastructure while complying with different regulatory frameworks.

Credit exposure is also increasing. Robinhood’s rapidly expanding margin-loan portfolio, Gold Card business and other credit products create possible losses from defaults or sharply declining asset prices.

Tokenization and Robinhood Chain introduce another category of technological risk involving smart contracts, blockchain infrastructure and securities-law interpretation.

Artificial intelligence introduces still another layer. Agentic Trading could drive customer engagement, but automated decision-making must be carefully controlled to reduce the risk of erroneous or inappropriate trades.

Finally, Robinhood must manage the operational consequences of its rapid expansion. The company is simultaneously integrating acquisitions, entering new countries, launching new financial products and reducing portions of its workforce.

The greatest strategic risk may therefore be complexity itself.

Can Robinhood Markets become a genuine financial super-app by 2027?

Robinhood has progressed significantly beyond the business that first became famous for commission-free stock trading.

The strongest evidence is not simply the expanding number of products. It is the increasing amount of money customers are keeping within the platform. Total platform assets reached $369 billion, retirement assets climbed to $34.5 billion, Gold subscribers reached 4.8 million and quarterly net deposits hit a record $21.7 billion.

Robinhood also says 13 businesses now generate at least $100 million in annualized revenue, suggesting diversification is becoming economically meaningful rather than remaining merely aspirational.

Prediction markets, credit cards, banking services and managed investing are increasingly contributing alongside equities, options and cryptocurrency.

Robinhood’s greatest competitive advantage may ultimately be distribution. It controls a financial platform used by tens of millions of customers and can introduce new services without having to acquire an entirely new audience every time it enters another financial category.

Its biggest challenge is that becoming a financial super-app means accepting many of the risks that traditional financial institutions have spent decades learning to manage.

Robinhood must simultaneously control market risk, credit risk, regulatory risk, cyber risk, artificial intelligence risk, international compliance and customer-protection obligations.

The growth outlook through 2027 therefore depends less on whether Robinhood can announce more products and more on whether those products deepen profitable customer relationships.

Continued growth in deposits, retirement assets, Robinhood Gold, banking, credit and wealth management would make the revenue base progressively more resilient. Greater dependence on speculative trading booms would leave earnings more volatile.

Robinhood has already demonstrated that it can disrupt retail brokerage. Its next test is substantially more ambitious: proving that the company which made investing unusually easy can also handle the complexity of becoming a global financial platform.
