Redding Rancheria Tribe, California Department of Conservation partner for green hydrogen facility
The Redding Rancheria Tribe, in collaboration with the State of California Department of Conservation, has announced a significant development in renewable energy. The Tribe’s wholly-owned subsidiary has been awarded a $500,000 grant from the Department of Conservation. This funding is a pivotal step towards the establishment of a new Green Hydrogen production facility in Red Bluff, California.
Green Hydrogen, an emerging leader in the clean energy sector, presents a sustainable solution to climate change challenges. This innovative energy source will be primarily used for fueling transportation along the I-5 corridor. By replacing CO2-emitting fossil fuels, Green Hydrogen contributes to a significant reduction in greenhouse gas emissions. Additionally, the facility plans to extend its capabilities to generating electricity.
The production of Green Hydrogen will utilize forest biomass from the Sierra Nevada mountains. This approach aligns with State and Federal policies aimed at preventing catastrophic forest fires. By removing dead, down, and diseased trees and underbrush from the forest, the project also contributes to environmental conservation and forest health.

David Shabazian, the Director of the Department of Conservation, expressed his enthusiasm for the project: “Converting forest biomass waste into carbon-negative energy is a critical part of achieving California’s climate goals while reducing wildfire hazards, improving watersheds and supporting sustainable local economies in the region.”
The facility is designed to produce over 30,000 kg of Green Hydrogen daily from renewable sources. The production process involves pyrolysis, a safe and proven method that requires significantly less electricity than traditional electrolysis and eliminates the need for carbon sequestration.
Jeremy Hayward, Tribal member and President of the Redding Rancheria Economic Development Corporation, highlighted the project’s environmental and societal benefits: “Producing hydrogen from excess forest biomass is a win/win for the environment, addressing climate change and destructive forest fires at the same time. We have to do our part to make this world a better place for our kids.”
H2 Energy Group, renowned for its expertise in Green Hydrogen production, will provide the necessary technology for the facility. Christopher Headrick, Chairman and Founder of H2 Energy Group, expressed excitement about the partnership, noting the natural suitability of the I-5 corridor for deploying this technology.
