Endeavour Silver’s Terronera shutdown enters second week as crucial high-grade period approaches

Endeavour Silver says there has been no material change at its Terronera mine after operations were suspended on August 12. The disruption comes as the recently commissioned mine moves into a higher-grade phase that was expected to support second-half production.

Endeavour Silver Corp. (NYSE: EXK; TSX: EDR) said operations at its Terronera mine in Jalisco, Mexico, remained suspended as of August 20, extending a disruption that began on August 12 following a blockade by members of a nearby Ejido community. Negotiations with community representatives are continuing, but the company reported no material change in the mine’s operational status and did not provide a timetable for restarting production.

The absence of a resolution is increasingly important because Terronera has moved rapidly from development project to a major contributor within Endeavour Silver’s operating portfolio. During the second quarter of 2026, the mine produced 608,347 ounces of silver and 7,666 ounces of gold after achieving commercial production in October 2025.

Those numbers represented roughly 31% of Endeavour Silver’s consolidated second-quarter silver output and about 73% of consolidated gold production. Terronera therefore carries disproportionate importance to the company’s gold output and silver-equivalent economics, even though Endeavour continues to operate Guanaceví in Mexico and Kolpa in Peru.

Why is the timing of the Terronera blockade particularly important?

Endeavour Silver had expected Terronera to become more productive during the second half of 2026 as mining development moved into higher-grade areas. First-half production deliberately came from lower-grade portions of the deposit, including stockwork material, while development work was intended to open higher-grade mining zones later in the year.

That means the blockade has emerged during a period that was supposed to mark an important transition in Terronera’s ramp-up. Second-quarter throughput had been broadly consistent with plan, while silver recovery improved to 85.4% and gold recovery averaged 72.6%. Management had expected further improvement as grades increased and plant processes were refined.

For full-year 2026, Endeavour’s guidance contemplated Terronera producing between 2.4 million and 2.6 million ounces of silver and between 35,000 and 36,000 ounces of gold. On a silver-equivalent basis, the mine was expected to contribute between 5.6 million and 5.8 million ounces, making it one of the central pillars of the company’s projected consolidated output of 14.6 million to 15.6 million silver-equivalent ounces.

A short interruption does not necessarily require a guidance change, particularly if lost tonnes can subsequently be recovered through mine sequencing or plant utilisation. The longer the suspension persists, however, the more difficult it becomes to absorb deferred production without affecting quarterly output or operating schedules.

What caused operations to stop at Endeavour Silver’s Terronera mine?

Endeavour initially disclosed on August 16 that operations had been suspended since August 12 following what it described as an illegal blockade by members of the nearby Ejido community. The company said community concerns involved road maintenance, support for medical services and communications, control and access relating to water supply, and requests for increased financial assistance.

The blockade had remained peaceful and orderly, according to the company, and Terronera continued to be accessible for maintenance activities with a reduced workforce supporting safety and security. Endeavour initially said it had legal remedies available if the dispute became prolonged, but its August 20 update placed the emphasis on continuing discussions with community representatives.

The latest statement described those negotiations as cordial and respectful and said Endeavour remained focused on reaching a constructive resolution that would allow an orderly resumption of full operations. The company did not announce an agreement, partial restart or change in staffing arrangements, making the lack of operational progress the central development in the update.

How exposed is Endeavour Silver if Terronera remains suspended?

Terronera is not Endeavour Silver’s only source of metal, which provides some operating diversification. Guanaceví and Kolpa continue to contribute production, with Kolpa benefiting from a significant processing expansion that increased second-quarter throughput to 233,408 tonnes.

The portfolio nevertheless cannot fully neutralise a prolonged Terronera interruption. Terronera produced approximately 1.14 million silver ounces and 16,144 gold ounces during the first six months of 2026, equivalent to about 2.59 million silver-equivalent ounces. Its planned full-year output also carries favourable by-product economics because of the mine’s significant gold contribution.

Endeavour’s original 2026 guidance projected Terronera cash costs of negative US$2 to negative US$1 per payable silver ounce after by-product credits, although all-in sustaining costs were forecast between US$28 and US$29 per ounce because of first-year sustaining capital, exploration and equipment spending. The mine was therefore expected to play an important role not only in production growth but also in the composition of consolidated operating economics.

The immediate question is no longer simply whether negotiations remain cordial. Investors and customers will increasingly be watching for a concrete restart date, any indication of lost production, and whether Endeavour changes its 2026 guidance if the suspension extends further into the second half.

For now, the company has not announced such a revision. With Terronera accounting for nearly three-quarters of Endeavour Silver’s second-quarter gold production and entering a period in which higher grades were expected, each additional week without a resolution increases the operational significance of what began as a local community dispute.
