Australia commits additional $74m to assist Ukraine amid Russian invasion

The Australian Government has pledged a new assistance package worth AUD 110 million ($73.6 million) to Ukraine, reinforcing its support in the country’s fight against Russia’s unprovoked invasion.

This aid aims to help Ukraine not only defend itself but also address humanitarian needs arising from the ongoing conflict.

Australia Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said: “This latest package of support demonstrates that Ukraine can count on Australia.

“We support international efforts to ensure Putin’s aggression fails and that Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity prevails.

“Australia is unwavering in our resolve to condemn and oppose Russia’s actions and to help Ukraine achieve victory.”

Australia has consistently stood with Ukraine since the onset of Russia’s invasion 16 months ago. This package is a continuation of Australia’s ongoing collaboration with the Ukrainian government to provide comprehensive assistance that aligns with the country’s needs and complements support from other global partners.

The package includes critical military assistance to bolster Ukraine’s defense capabilities, responding to Ukraine’s requests for vehicles and ammunition. It comprises 70 military vehicles, featuring 28 M113 armored vehicles, 14 Special Operations Vehicles, and 28 MAN 40M medium trucks along with 14 trailers.

Furthermore, it covers the supply of 105mm artillery ammunition, providing a significant boost to Ukraine’s battlefield resources.

Beyond defense support, Australia’s assistance package recognizes the human cost of the invasion. It includes a $10 million contribution to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, specifically the Ukrainian Humanitarian Fund. This fund aims to address the urgent needs of Ukrainian families, elderly, and children for shelter, health services, clean water, and sanitation.

In a move designed to foster economic recovery and trade opportunities, Australia has also decided to extend duty-free access for goods imported from Ukraine for another 12 months.

These recent commitments augment Australia’s total contribution to Ukraine, bringing the total to AUD $790 million. This sum includes AUD 610 million dedicated to military assistance, reflecting Australia’s commitment to stand with Ukraine amidst the crisis.
