The day after the announcement of the formation of the ‘INDIA’ (Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance) — a coalition of 26 political parties aiming to challenge the ruling BJP in next year’s Indian Lok Sabha elections — a police complaint was lodged against the alliance.
The complaint, lodged at the Barakhamba Police Station in Delhi, alleges that the coalition’s use of the name ‘INDIA’ constitutes undue influence and misappropriation.
The opposition political parties, which coalesced under the ‘INDIA vs NDA’ banner, have been accused of making improper use of the name ‘INDIA’ in their campaign, leading to the police complaint.
The complaint specifically suggests that this action has the potential to cause offence to citizens who identify themselves as Indians.
Dr Avinish Mishra is reported to be behind the complaint. According to ANI news agency, Dr Avinish Mishra has requested ‘necessary action’ against the involved parties.
The complaint was filed under Sections 2(c) and 5 of the Emblems Act, which prohibits and provides punishment for the misuse of national emblems or names, potentially subjecting offenders to a fine of up to 500 rupees. The unfolding situation adds another layer of intrigue to the political landscape as the country gears up for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.
