Delhi govt responds to Gokulpuri Metro Tragedy with expert committee and compensation
In a swift response to the tragic incident at the Gokulpuri metro station in northeast Delhi, where a wall collapse resulted in the death of a 53-year-old man and left four others injured, the Delhi government has taken decisive steps to address the concerns and ensure accountability. Delhi Transport Minister Kailash Gahlot announced on Thursday that the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has been directed to form a committee of experts tasked with investigating the collapse from all angles.
The incident occurred on Thursday morning when a portion of the wall at the Gokulpuri metro station, part of the Pink Line, gave way, causing debris to fall onto the road below. The victim, a man on his scooter, was fatally injured by the falling rubble. This unfortunate event has raised serious questions about the structural integrity and safety measures in place at metro construction sites.
Following the incident, Gahlot conveyed his deep regret and outlined the actions being taken by the government and the DMRC. A comprehensive investigation by a committee of experts will be conducted, with a report expected within two weeks. Additionally, the DMRC has announced compensation for the victims: ₹25 lakh for the family of the deceased, ₹5 lakh for those grievously injured, and ₹1 lakh for minor injuries. Two officials have also been suspended in the wake of the tragedy.
The Delhi government and the DMRC are ensuring swift financial assistance to the affected families, alongside providing necessary medical support to the injured. This move reflects the authorities’ commitment to addressing the aftermath of the incident and supporting the victims during this challenging time.
Eyewitnesses described the scene as horrifying, noting that the situation could have been even more disastrous. The area, popular among students for after-school snacks, witnessed a narrow escape from what could have been a larger calamity.
The Gokulpuri metro station incident has underscored the need for stringent safety protocols and regular maintenance checks within the metro rail system. The formation of an expert committee and the provision of compensation are initial steps towards addressing the immediate concerns, but the incident also calls for a broader reassessment of safety measures across the Delhi Metro network.
This tragic event not only highlights the importance of safety in public transportation infrastructure but also the government’s responsibility in ensuring the well-being of its citizens. As the investigation proceeds, the focus will remain on learning from this incident and implementing measures to prevent such tragedies in the future.
