Mid America Pet Food, based in Mount Pleasant, Texas, has expanded its October 30, 2023, voluntary recall to include additional pet food products. The recall, which now includes products with Best By Dates before 10/31/24 produced at its Mount Pleasant facility, is due to potential contamination with Salmonella. This bacteria poses risks to animals consuming the products and to humans handling them.

Health Risks Associated with Salmonella

Individuals infected with Salmonella may experience symptoms like nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal cramping, and fever. In rare cases, more severe ailments can occur. Pets with Salmonella infections might show lethargy, diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. Healthy pets can also be carriers and infect others.

Products Included in the Recall

The recall extends to several brands produced at the Mount Pleasant facility, including Victor Super Premium Dog Foods, Wayne Feeds Dog Food, Eagle Mountain Pet Food, and some Member’s Mark varieties. All recalled products have Best By Dates before 10/31/24. The products range in variety from dog food, including multiple formulas and bag sizes, to cat food.

Safety Precautions for Consumers

Retailers and distributors have been instructed to immediately remove and destroy all recalled products from their inventory. Reports of Salmonella Infections

As of November 1, 2023, seven people have reported Salmonella infections potentially linked to these products. The recall expansion comes after random and targeted sampling of finished products by the firm and the South Carolina Department of Agriculture revealed positive tests for Salmonella.

Consumers can find the Best By Date on the middle top of the back of each bag. Mid America Pet Food advises pet owners to take appropriate safety measures and remain vigilant about the products they use.
