Intel (NASDAQ: INTC) earnings test a turnaround after a 30% retreat

Intel Corporation (NASDAQ: INTC) designs and manufactures processors, graphics products, networking technology and advanced semiconductors, while also attempting to establish Intel Foundry as a globally competitive contract-manufacturing business. Investor attention is now centred on the company’s second-quarter results, scheduled for release after the market closes on July 23, 2026. The report arrives after Intel shares surrendered almost one-third of their value from late-June levels, despite remaining dramatically above their 52-week low. The central question is whether Intel can show that stronger data-centre demand, improving supply and progress on Intel 18A are translating into sustainable margins rather than merely supporting a compelling turnaround narrative.

What does Intel Corporation currently own and operate within its changing business structure?

Intel’s core operating structure consists of the Client Computing Group, the Data Center and Artificial Intelligence segment and Intel Foundry. The Client Computing Group supplies processors and related products for notebooks, desktop computers and edge devices. Data Center and Artificial Intelligence serves cloud providers, enterprises and communications customers with server processors, networking products and artificial-intelligence infrastructure components.

Intel Foundry develops process technologies, operates the company’s manufacturing network and provides wafer fabrication, packaging, assembly and testing services. Most foundry activity still comes from manufacturing products for Intel’s own processor businesses, meaning Intel Foundry is not yet comparable with an independent contract manufacturer supported by a broad portfolio of external customers. External foundry revenue was only US$174 million during the first quarter, although that was substantially higher than the US$31 million generated a year earlier.

The portfolio has also changed. Intel sold a 51% interest in Altera in September 2025, after which Altera was deconsolidated and began appearing as an external foundry customer rather than a wholly owned operating business. Why has INTC stock retreated sharply even as Intel’s longer-term market value expanded?

Intel shares traded at approximately US$97.98 at 11:19 a.m. EDT on July 20, up about 3.1% during the session. However, the intraday price remained around 5% below the July 13 close of US$103.12 and about 30.5% below the June 22 close of US$140.94. The stock was also roughly 31% below its 52-week high of US$142.35.

That correction should not be mistaken for a return to historically depressed valuation levels. Intel’s 52-week range extends from US$18.97 to US$142.35, leaving the shares more than five times above the low even after the recent retreat. At the July 20 intraday price, Intel’s equity value was approximately US$492 billion, based on about 5.03 billion outstanding shares.

This creates an unusual valuation tension. The market has already assigned substantial value to Intel’s manufacturing recovery, artificial-intelligence exposure, stronger server demand and potential external foundry wins. The recent decline has reduced some of that optimism, but the current capitalisation still requires Intel to deliver more than modest revenue stabilisation.

What must Intel’s second-quarter results reveal beyond a simple revenue beat?

Intel previously guided for second-quarter revenue between US$13.8 billion and US$14.8 billion. At the midpoint, management expected a GAAP gross margin of 37.5%, a non-GAAP gross margin of 39%, GAAP earnings of US$0.08 per diluted share and adjusted earnings of US$0.20 per diluted share.

Current Visible Alpha estimates point to revenue of approximately US$14.4 billion, representing growth of about 12% from the previous year. Data Center and Artificial Intelligence revenue is expected to increase by approximately 42% to US$5.6 billion, while Client Computing Group revenue is forecast to rise more modestly to around US$8 billion. Other published consensus estimates place adjusted earnings near US$0.19 to US$0.22 per share.

A revenue figure near the upper half of Intel’s range would be constructive, but gross margin and forward guidance could prove more influential. Intel is selling a richer mix of premium server and client processors, yet newer process nodes initially carry higher manufacturing costs. Consequently, stronger average selling prices do not automatically produce the level of margin expansion that might normally accompany higher revenue.

Investors will also want evidence that supply availability is improving. Intel reported that internal and external supply constraints prevented it from meeting all available demand during the first quarter. Client product constraints were expected to continue at least through the first half, while internal constraints affecting server products could persist throughout 2026. A stronger revenue outlook supported by greater unit availability would carry more weight than growth produced principally through pricing.

Can Intel Foundry convert manufacturing milestones into credible external economics?

Intel Foundry remains both the greatest source of potential strategic value and the largest operating challenge. The segment generated US$5.42 billion of first-quarter revenue, including internal activity, but recorded a US$2.44 billion operating loss. The loss was slightly wider than the US$2.32 billion reported one year earlier, partly because early Intel 18A production carried higher wafer costs.

Technical progress is nevertheless becoming more visible. Intel has released its first products manufactured using Intel 18A and is developing Intel 18A-P for future internal products and external customers. Intel 18A-P had entered risk production by June, while management continued work on Intel 14A, the company’s next-generation manufacturing platform.

The economic evidence is less mature. Intel has warned that continued investment in Intel 14A and successor nodes will depend on securing sufficient committed demand from significant external customers and Intel’s own future products. Failure to obtain enough design wins could make continued development uneconomic and could lead the company to pause certain advanced-node investments or manufacturing projects.

Intel’s recently announced €5 billion investment at its Leixlip campus in Ireland demonstrates that management is still expanding advanced manufacturing capacity where it sees demand. The programme will upgrade existing fabrication facilities, install advanced equipment and increase output for Intel Xeon 6 and future Xeon processors manufactured using Intel 3. Yet greater capacity becomes economically valuable only when utilisation, yields, pricing and customer commitments produce returns above the cost of capital.

Why are server demand, product mix and manufacturing yields now inseparable?

Intel’s first-quarter performance showed that its processor business is improving faster than its consolidated accounting results initially suggested. Revenue rose 7% to US$13.6 billion, while adjusted earnings reached US$0.29 per share. Intel Products revenue increased 9%, supported by a 22% rise in Data Center and Artificial Intelligence revenue.

The data-centre improvement was driven primarily by a 27% increase in server average selling prices, reflecting stronger sales of premium processors and pricing actions intended partly to offset higher input costs. Server volumes, however, decreased 5%. Client revenue also benefited from higher pricing, but notebook and desktop volumes fell 13%.

These figures expose the next earnings challenge. Higher average selling prices have supported revenue and profit, but sustained revaluation would be easier to defend if Intel also reports improving volumes. Volume recovery would indicate that additional factory capacity and newer products are allowing the company to serve demand rather than ration limited supply through higher-value product mixes.

Intel 18A therefore matters in several ways at once. It is a manufacturing technology, the production platform for new Intel processors, a potential service for external customers and a key determinant of future gross margins. Better yields could improve product availability and manufacturing costs simultaneously. Weak yields would pressure margins, delay capacity benefits and reduce Intel Foundry’s attractiveness to prospective customers.

Does Intel’s balance sheet provide enough flexibility for its manufacturing ambitions?

Intel ended the first quarter with US$17.25 billion in cash and cash equivalents and US$15.54 billion in short-term investments, producing total cash and short-term investments of approximately US$32.79 billion. Total debt was about US$45.03 billion before Intel completed the repurchase of the remaining interest in its Irish manufacturing joint venture.

The company subsequently used cash, short-term investments and a US$6.5 billion term loan to fund the US$14.2 billion repurchase of Apollo Global Management’s minority interest in the Ireland facility. Intel has said it intends to refinance the term loan subject to market conditions. The transaction gives Intel full ownership of an advanced manufacturing asset, but it also increases the importance of generating adequate returns from the facility.

Intel is not facing an immediate absence of liquidity. The more relevant question is capital efficiency. The company must finance process development, factory upgrades, working capital and product launches while attempting to reduce foundry losses. The thesis would weaken if revenue growth remained dependent mainly on price increases while unit volumes continued falling. Persistent foundry losses, weaker gross-margin guidance or further increases in manufacturing capital requirements without corresponding external demand would also challenge the valuation. A substantial delay in securing Intel 14A customers would be particularly important because Intel has explicitly linked future advanced-node investment to sufficient committed demand.

Intel Corporation has unquestionably moved beyond the deeply depressed expectations reflected in its 52-week low. Data-centre revenue is growing, adjusted profitability has improved and Intel 18A is supporting commercial products. However, the market has already capitalised much of the possible turnaround, leaving limited room for vague progress.

The July 23 report must therefore do more than clear a quarterly earnings estimate. It needs to demonstrate that Intel’s product recovery, manufacturing expansion and foundry strategy are beginning to reinforce one another. The next measurable proof point will be whether management can combine stronger revenue with improving margins, rising volumes and credible external demand for advanced manufacturing.
