HCLTech Q1 FY27 profit rises 20% as record bookings sharpen the growth test

HCLTech delivered stronger profit, bookings and Advanced AI revenue in Q1 FY27, but sequential constant-currency weakness means execution remains the central investor test.

HCL Technologies Limited (NSE: HCLTECH; BSE: 532281) reported consolidated revenue of ₹34,579 crore for the quarter ended June 30, 2026, up 13.9% year on year, while net income climbed 20.3% to ₹4,624 crore. EBIT rose 18.0% to ₹5,831 crore and the reported EBIT margin expanded to 16.9%, even after 62 basis points of restructuring costs. New deal wins reached a record first-quarter level of $2.407 billion, while Advanced AI revenue increased 62.1% year on year in constant currency to $171 million. The company retained its FY27 constant-currency revenue growth guidance of 1.0% to 4.0% and its EBIT margin range of 17.5% to 18.5%. The results strengthen the profitability and order-book case, but a 0.5% sequential decline in constant-currency revenue means the growth debate is not yet settled.

Why does HCLTech’s 20% profit growth look stronger than its underlying revenue momentum?

The most important distinction in the HCLTech Q1 FY27 results is the gap between reported rupee growth and underlying constant-currency performance. Revenue increased 13.9% year on year in Indian rupees, but US dollar revenue rose only 3.0% to $3.65 billion and constant-currency revenue advanced 2.6%. Sequentially, rupee revenue increased 1.8%, while dollar revenue declined 0.9% and constant-currency revenue fell 0.5%.

A weaker rupee provided a significant translation benefit. HCLTech recorded an average exchange rate of ₹94.73 per US dollar during Q1 FY27, compared with ₹85.62 in the corresponding quarter and ₹92.28 in Q4 FY26. The currency movement does not diminish the reported earnings, but it does mean the 13.9% rupee revenue increase should not be interpreted as equivalent underlying demand growth.

Profitability produced a more encouraging signal. EBIT increased from ₹4,942 crore to ₹5,831 crore, while the reported EBIT margin improved by 56 basis points year on year and 39 basis points sequentially. Excluding restructuring costs, the EBIT margin was 17.5%, placing HCLTech at the lower boundary of its full-year guidance.

There is still an important wrinkle. The restructuring impact fell from 122 basis points in Q4 FY26 to 62 basis points in Q1 FY27. Consequently, the reported margin expanded sequentially, but the margin excluding restructuring declined from approximately 17.7% to 17.5%. The underlying movement was therefore closer to modest compression than clean sequential expansion.

Gross margin also eased from 33.7% to 33.4% year on year. The improvement further down the income statement was supported by selling, general and administrative expenses falling from 12.3% to 12.0% of revenue and depreciation and amortisation declining from 3.6% to 3.0%. This suggests tighter overhead control and operating efficiency played a meaningful role in the earnings improvement.

Can HCLTech’s record Q1 bookings and $171 million AI revenue convert into faster FY27 growth?

New deal wins of $2.407 billion were approximately one-third higher than the $1.81 billion reported in Q1 FY26. This was the highest first-quarter booking total recorded by HCLTech and provides stronger revenue visibility at a time when discretionary technology spending remains inconsistent.

Bookings, however, are not revenue waiting politely in the next quarter’s inbox. Large contracts can take several quarters to transition, require upfront staffing and infrastructure, and contain productivity commitments that limit their initial margin contribution. Investors will therefore need to watch whether the Q1 bookings produce accelerating services revenue during the second half of FY27.

Advanced AI revenue supplied the quarter’s fastest growth metric. Revenue reached $171 million, increasing 10.6% sequentially and 62.1% year on year in constant currency. At the current quarterly level, the business has an annualised revenue run rate of approximately $684 million.

That is commercially meaningful but still represents less than 5% of consolidated revenue. Advanced AI can become a larger growth engine, especially as enterprises move from experimentation to production deployments, but it cannot yet compensate independently for weakness across telecommunications, engineering services or mature software products.

HCLTech is also committing capital to strengthen its AI and software portfolio. The company acquired a 10.46% interest in Axonwise Private Limited, which operates Sarvam AI, for approximately $151 million on June 25, 2026. The investment provides access to India-focused language models, enterprise AI capabilities and industry-specific development opportunities, but its strategic value will depend on converting shared technology into commercially repeatable services.

The $240 million acquisition of Jaspersoft from Cloud Software Group was completed on July 1 and will begin affecting the financial statements from Q2 FY27. Jaspersoft adds embedded analytics and reporting capabilities alongside an established developer community. Integration, product positioning and cross-selling through HCLSoftware will determine whether the transaction strengthens recurring revenue or merely adds another platform requiring investment.

Which HCLTech businesses and client sectors are supporting growth, and where is pressure building?

IT and Business Services remained the main growth and profitability engine, representing 75.3% of revenue. The segment grew 4.2% year on year in constant currency, remained flat sequentially and delivered a 17.0% EBIT margin. Its margin increased by 184 basis points year on year and 65 basis points sequentially, making it the clearest source of operating improvement.

Engineering and Research and Development Services presented a weaker picture. The business accounted for 16.5% of revenue and grew only 0.3% year on year in constant currency, while revenue declined 3.7% sequentially. Its EBIT margin of 15.6% was broadly stable against the previous quarter but 214 basis points below the prior-year level.

HCLSoftware produced a mixed result. Constant-currency revenue declined 5.3% year on year but increased 2.2% sequentially. Annual recurring revenue rose 2.0% year on year to $1.063 billion, suggesting greater stability in subscription and support activity than the headline revenue decline implies.

The software margin remains the concern. HCLSoftware’s EBIT margin fell to 17.6%, down 475 basis points year on year and 168 basis points sequentially. The combination of shrinking year-on-year revenue and weaker profitability means Jaspersoft integration and broader portfolio monetisation will carry greater strategic importance than the acquisition price alone suggests.

Financial Services, the largest services vertical, grew 5.3% in constant currency and increased its revenue contribution to 22.1%. Technology and Services grew 7.3%, Retail and Consumer Packaged Goods increased 10.1%, and Public Services expanded 12.0%. These areas demonstrate that demand has not disappeared, but spending is concentrating around efficiency, infrastructure modernisation, cybersecurity and AI-supported transformation.

Telecommunications, Media, Publishing and Entertainment remained the major drag, with revenue declining 10.9% year on year. Europe was almost flat at 0.1% growth, while the United States grew 2.9%. Faster expansion in India and other international markets helped, but these geographies remain too small to offset prolonged weakness across HCL Technologies Limited’s largest developed markets.

Client concentration continued to improve. The top five clients generated 11.6% of trailing revenue, down from 12.6% a year earlier, while the top 20 contribution declined from 29.9% to 28.0%. Broader client diversification can reduce account-specific volatility, although it may also require more selling and transition investment to sustain growth across a larger customer base.

What does HCLTech’s 3,292-person quarterly headcount reduction signal about its AI operating model?

HCLTech ended Q1 FY27 with 223,889 employees, representing a net reduction of 3,292 from the previous quarter. Only 1,056 freshers were added, while trailing attrition increased slightly from 12.5% to 12.7%.

The reduction should not automatically be interpreted as 3,292 AI-related job losses. Net headcount reflects hiring, voluntary departures, restructuring, project completions and capacity adjustments across multiple countries and business units. Nevertheless, the scale of the decline indicates a more disciplined approach to workforce deployment as the company restructures operations and embeds automation into delivery.

Revenue per employee increased 3.3% year on year to an annualised $65,500. This is positive for productivity and margins, particularly if AI tools allow HCL Technologies Limited to deliver more work with flatter teams. The harder test is whether productivity gains remain durable when recently won large deals begin ramping.

A tighter workforce creates execution risk if new contracts require scarce engineering, cybersecurity, cloud and AI talent at short notice. HCLTech must therefore balance headcount discipline with reskilling and selective recruitment. Cutting capacity is easy to celebrate for one quarter; rebuilding specialist capacity in a competitive labour market is considerably less amusing.

Does HCLTech’s balance sheet and dividend policy leave enough room for AI and software investment?

Cash generation remains a significant strength. Free cash flow represented 99% of trailing net income, while operating cash flow represented 111%. Company-level return on invested capital reached 40.7%, and the Services business delivered a return of 47.8%.

The IFRS balance sheet showed cash, bank balances and current investments exceeding $2.5 billion, against borrowings of only $16 million. This gives HCLTech ample financial capacity to absorb the Sarvam AI investment, the Jaspersoft acquisition and further technology spending without placing material pressure on leverage.

The board declared an interim dividend of ₹12 per share, with July 17, 2026 set as the record date and July 27 as the payment date. The payout continues HCL Technologies Limited’s long-established quarterly distribution record and reinforces the stock’s income proposition.

The capital-allocation tension is that HCLTech is pursuing acquisitions, strategic AI investments, restructuring and a high dividend payout simultaneously. The balance sheet can support that combination at present, but management must ensure that cash distributions do not crowd out product development or integration spending. Investors should judge future acquisitions against revenue growth and return on invested capital, not the excitement generated by the word “AI” in the announcement.

Why did HCLTech retain conservative FY27 guidance despite stronger Q1 bookings and profit?

HCLTech maintained its FY27 company revenue growth guidance at 1.0% to 4.0% in constant currency, Services growth guidance at 1.5% to 4.5%, and EBIT margin guidance at 17.5% to 18.5%. The retained outlook is prudent rather than overtly bullish.

Q1 constant-currency growth of 2.6% and Services growth of 3.5% were within the annual ranges, but both consolidated revenue and Services revenue declined sequentially. Telecom weakness, near-flat European growth, softer engineering demand and the timing of deal transitions all argue against raising guidance after one quarter.

The $2.407 billion booking total improves visibility, but management must demonstrate that contract ramp-ups can overcome productivity concessions, transition expenditure and cautious discretionary spending. A contract can be strategically valuable while contributing relatively little revenue during its opening quarters.

The margin outlook also requires further work. The reported Q1 EBIT margin of 16.9% began below the full-year range, while the 17.5% margin excluding restructuring sat exactly at the lower boundary. HCLTech will need stronger utilisation, continuing overhead discipline and a recovery in higher-margin software activity to move comfortably within guidance.

The most constructive interpretation is that the company has retained room to outperform if bookings convert faster and AI revenue remains strong. The cautious interpretation is that management still sees enough demand and execution uncertainty to avoid resetting expectations. For now, the guidance is achievable, but it is not yet de-risked.

How should investors read the HCLTECH share rally when the Q1 FY27 filing came after market close?

HCLTECH shares closed at ₹1,221.20 on July 13, up 4.9% during the session. The stock had gained approximately 7.7% over the preceding week and around 10% over one month. However, the financial results were released after the market closed, meaning the rally reflected anticipation, recent contract momentum and a broader information technology sector advance rather than a direct response to the Q1 numbers.

The share price remained approximately 31% below its 52-week high of ₹1,780.10 and about 19% above its 52-week low of ₹1,030. The stock was also down roughly 25% over one year and 27% over six months. This wider performance shows that the recent rise is a rebound from depressed sentiment, not yet confirmation of a lasting valuation recovery.

The broader information technology index gained 3.6% during the session, while several large Indian technology services companies advanced. HCLTECH outperformed that sector move, but only moderately. The market was already positioning for better order flow and a less severe demand environment before the filing arrived.

Pre-results analyst sentiment remained divided, with an aggregate hold signal. Foreign institutional ownership had continued to decline through March 2026, while domestic institutional and mutual fund ownership increased. That split reflects the central valuation argument: domestic investors see cash generation, dividends and an eventual technology-spending recovery, while foreign investors remain cautious about growth visibility and global enterprise demand.

The Q1 FY27 results are fundamentally constructive but not flawless. Profit growth, bookings, AI revenue, IT and Business Services margins and balance-sheet strength support a more positive view. Sequential constant-currency contraction, HCLSoftware margin pressure, telecommunications weakness and the sharp workforce reduction keep execution risk elevated.

The next trading session will provide the first genuine earnings reaction. Beyond that immediate move, the more important catalysts will be deal conversion, HCLSoftware stabilisation, Jaspersoft integration and evidence that Advanced AI revenue can scale without diluting margins.

What are the key takeaways from HCLTech’s Q1 FY27 results for investors and competitors?

  • HCLTech delivered 20.3% net income growth, but currency translation made reported rupee growth look stronger than constant-currency demand.
  • Record first-quarter bookings of $2.407 billion improve medium-term revenue visibility but require disciplined contract transitions.
  • Advanced AI revenue reached $171 million and grew 62.1% year on year, although it still represents less than 5% of total revenue.
  • IT and Business Services produced the strongest combination of revenue growth and margin expansion.
  • HCLSoftware’s recurring revenue base improved, but its year-on-year revenue decline and margin contraction remain material concerns.
  • Telecommunications weakness and near-flat European growth continue to limit broader services momentum.
  • The reduction of 3,292 employees lifted productivity but creates capacity and skill-management risks as large contracts ramp.
  • Strong cash conversion and minimal borrowing provide room for dividends, the Sarvam AI investment and Jaspersoft integration.
  • Retained FY27 guidance looks achievable, but reported margins must improve and sequential revenue growth must return.
  • The 4.9% share-price rally occurred before the results, leaving the next trading session as the first true market verdict.
