A coach carrying German high-school students to Paris crashed with a delivery van on the A28 motorway near Wezep in the eastern Netherlands early on August 24, leaving several people seriously injured and forcing emergency services to close both directions of one of the region’s major transport routes.
The Austrian-registered coach was carrying 54 students and four teachers from Gemeinschaftsschule Probstei in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. Dutch emergency authorities said the collision occurred at around 4.15 am and triggered a GRIP 2 emergency response, used when an incident requires coordination across multiple emergency organisations.
At least eight people were taken to hospital according to Dutch police information cited by local authorities, while dozens of students sustained lighter injuries such as cuts from broken glass. No life-threatening injuries had been reported by the school in the subsequent updates.

The reception centre also illustrates why emergency planning extends beyond casualties. Dozens of teenagers who escape hospitalisation may still need food, transport, communications with families and psychological assistance after experiencing a violent crash.
How severe were the injuries after the A28 coach accident?

The fortunate element is that a collision violent enough to overturn a coach carrying nearly 60 students and teachers did not produce a confirmed fatality. The investigation now needs to determine why the crash occurred and whether any finding has implications for overnight school-trip coach operations beyond this individual journey.
