WABAG wins contract for Mamelles sea water desalination project, Senegal
Mamelles sea water desalination project : VA TECH WABAG (WABAG), an Indian water company, in a consortium, has bagged a contract worth €146 million for a water desalination project in Senegal from Société Nationale Des Eaux du Sénégal (SONES), which is the Senegalese national water company.
The design, build, operate (DBO) contract is for the 50MLD Mamelles sea water desalination project, which can be expandable to 100MLD. The project is funded by Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
WABAG’s consortium partners for the project execution are Japan-based Toyota Tsusho and France-based Eiffage Génie Civil.
WABAG will be the technology and system integrator of the Mamelles sea water desalination project, while Eiffage will handle the construction work, and Toyota Tsusho will be the co-manager.
WABAG’s scope under the contract for the Mamelles sea water desalination project
The scope of WABAG under the contract will be engineering and procurement and operation and maintenance (O&M), which is worth nearly one-third of the consortium order value.
WABAG’s engineering and procurement scope covers design, engineering and supply of electromechanical equipment, supervision of installation and commissioning of the water desalination project in Senegal followed by O&M of the plant for a period of two years.

Located on a high hilltop, in the main corniche of Dakar city, the Mamelles sea water desalination project will be fed with sea water from the Atlantic Ocean.
The water desalination plant in Senegal will be based on sea water reverse osmosis (SWRO) technology. A groundbreaking ceremony for the Mamelles desalination project was carried out recently in Dakar.
