UltraTech Cement pledges to cut CO2 emissions by 25% by 2030

UltraTech Limited has taken a pledge to cut its CO2 emissions by a further 25% by the end of this decade as part of its commitment to the 2050 Cement and Concrete Industry Roadmap for Net Zero Concrete.

According to the company, the commitment to manufacture carbon neutral concrete by 2050 is a collective decision by the major cement and concrete companies in the world to contribute fully to developing the sustainable world of tomorrow.

UltraTech Cement said that it has made the commitment as a founding member of (GCCA).

The Indian firm is among the 40 leading cement and concrete manufacturers in the world which have affirmed their commitment to net zero concrete by 2050. The association has also agreed to an intermediate goal of offsetting five billion tonnes of CO2 emissions by 2030.

The GCCA has published a roadmap called ‘Concrete Future’ for setting out the path that the industry will follow for achieving full decarbonization by 2050.

“GCCA’s ‘Concrete Future’ roadmap outlines this collective endeavour and will guide us to a Net Zero future for the building material sector. The roadmap will help deliver a decarbonized industry, provide Net Zero concrete and, together, help build a sustainable world of tomorrow.”

UltraTech Cement said that it is targeting to use renewables sources for meeting 100% of its electricity needs by 2050. The Indian cement manufacturer aims to double energy productivity by the financial year 2035, from the base year of FY10.

It has pledged to cut down Scope 1 GHG intensity by 27% by 2032 from the base year of 2017. Besides, the cement company has committed to bring down Scope 2 GHG intensity by 69% by 2032 from the base year of 2017.

By 2024, will aim to scale up its green energy mix to 34% of its total power requirement. The company plans to achieve this by continuously boosting energy productivity, increasing the use of renewable energy, and reusing heat from its own operations with the help of waste heat recovery systems (WHRS).

Presently, UltraTech Cement has a green energy capacity of 273MW through 125MW of WHRS installed capacity and contracted renewable energy of 148MW.
