TotalEnergies, SOCAR commence production from Absheron field in Caspian Sea

TotalEnergies and its partner, the State Oil Company of the Republic of Azerbaijan (SOCAR), have announced the commencement of production from the first phase of development of the Absheron gas and condensate field.

The field, situated about 100 km southeast of in the , promises to bolster the gas supply in response to the increasing demand. It was discovered in 2011 following which, an exploration and appraisal program was carried out, which confirmed the field’s commercial viability.

Nicolas Terraz — President of Exploration and Production said: “We are very pleased to announce the start-up of the Absheron gas field, the result of our exploration team’s success. This project is in line with the Company’s strategy of meeting the growing demand for gas and reinforces our partnership with the national company SOCAR.”

The initial phase of development involves connecting a subsea production well to a new gas processing platform, which is further linked to SOCAR’s existing facilities in Oil Rocks. The field is expected to generate a daily output of four million cubic meters of gas and 12,000 barrels of condensate. The produced gas is earmarked for sale in the domestic market of Azerbaijan.

The ‘s development delivers additional gas supplies to accommodate the growing demand. The production process boasts a competitive technical cost and low greenhouse gas emissions intensity, aligning with TotalEnergies’ strategy. TotalEnergies and SOCAR each own a 50% stake in the project, managed by the joint entity JOCAP (Joint Operating Company of Absheron Petroleum).
