STEP Fusion programme: £1.3bn funding, 100MW target, West Burton construction and 2040 timeline
The United Kingdom’s STEP Fusion programme is advancing into preliminary design at West Burton in Nottinghamshire, backed by approximately £1.3 billion for its current delivery phase. The prototype spherical tokamak aims to demonstrate at least 100MW of net electrical output, tritium fuel self-sufficiency and a credible route to commercial fusion operations from 2040.
