Six-year-old among dead as Russian missile ravages Ukrainian city of Chernihiv
In a harrowing incident, the scenic city of Chernihiv witnessed death and devastation as a Russian missile blasted its central square, killing seven innocent souls, including a 6-year-old child, and injuring 90 others, the interior ministry confirmed this Saturday.
The chilling strike disrupted a religious celebration, as locals headed to church. Shockingly, among the victims were 12 children and 10 law enforcement officers, revealing the missile’s indiscriminate wrath.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, while on duty in Sweden, took to Telegram, painting a grim picture of the heart-wrenching incident. He lamented, “An ordinary Saturday maliciously morphed into a dark day of anguish and sorrow by Russia.”
Zelenskiy’s post offered a glimpse into the aftermath: debris scattered amidst the rubble of the once vibrant square, the iconic regional drama theatre’s façade battered, and haunting images of mangled cars with casualties within.
With its picturesque boulevards and timeless churches, Chernihiv lies just 90 miles north of Kyiv. Notably, the drama theatre’s roof bore the brunt of the explosion, being entirely obliterated.
This ruthless strike underscores Russia’s continued aggression, with cities, even distant from the conflict zone, falling prey to missile and drone attacks since their invasion commenced in February the previous year.
In a defiant display of resistance, Kyiv’s air force reported a significant triumph earlier on Saturday – the successful interception and destruction of 15 out of 17 Iranian-made Shahed drones, which Moscow had unleashed in a nocturnal raid.
