Siemens Gamesa, in mid-January 2021, secured a turbine supply contract from Engie for 434MW Santo Agostinho wind farm in Brazil.
The wind farm to be built in north-east Rio Grande do Norte will be equipped with 70 SG 5.8-170 turbines, that are integrated with OptimaFlex technology to operate at 6.2MW.
According to Siemens Gamesa, the SG 5.8-170 turbine has the highest power ratings in the onshore market apart from having one of the largest rotors to provide an extremely competitive levelized cost of energy (LCoE).
Lars Bondo Krogsgaard – CEO of Siemens Gamesa Onshore business, commenting on the Santo Agostinho wind farm contract, said: “This deal underscores how attractive the Siemens Gamesa 5.X platform is becoming globally, and we are pleased to continue to develop a close partnership with Engie in Brazil on top of this. The country is truly becoming a beacon for wind energy in Latin America.”
The Santo Agostinho wind farm is the third project to use Siemens Gamesa’s 5.X platform in Brazil. In December 2020, the wind turbine company had signed a 465MW contract in Bahia state.
The energy generated at both the wind farms will be sold under a power purchase agreement (PPA).
The first contract for the Siemens Gamesa 5.X platform in Brazil is the 312MW Tucano wind farm, which was signed in April 2020.
Siemens Gamesa said that the 5.X series turbines will be locally produced at its facility in Camacari, Bahia.
