Larsen & Toubro supplies modules for Linde’s gasification facility
India’s Larsen & Toubro (L&T) has supplied 46 process and piperack modules to Linde Engineering, Singapore, for a gasification facility, which will produce hydrogen and synthesis gas.
Weighing 34,000 metric tons, modules were fabricated by Larsen & Toubro at its modular fabrication facility at Kattupalli, Chennai.
Subramanian Sarma — Larsen & Toubro Whole-Time Director and Senior Executive Vice President (Energy) said: “A complete pitch gasification project was conceived to be built by Linde Engineering in modular form and shipped to Singapore for installation.
“Linde explored numerous fabrication yards throughout the world before settling on L&T’s Fabrication Facility at Kattupalli, close to Chennai in India for fabrication of these large Process and Piperack Modules.”
The Kattupalli facility is located on the east coast of India and is equipped with modern infrastructure and machinery to manage huge capacities of complex module fabrication.

Under the project, Larsen & Toubro delivered modules with several metallurgies, namely low-temperature carbon steel, low alloy, and inconel materials with shop-applied fireproofing and cold/hot insulation.
Larsen & Toubro stated: “Among many other milestones, the manufacturing and shipment of large modules — the heaviest being 2,800 MT and the tallest being 51 meters (m) (equivalent of a 11-storey building) with a base footprint of 35m x 21m represent the magnitude and complexities involved.”
Through its Energy – Hydrocarbon unit, Larsen & Toubro provides modular solutions, mainly for onshore and offshore oil and gas industry. These include deep-water SPS/SURF projects and offshore wind farm projects.
Larsen & Toubro’s three modular fabrication plants are located at Hazira and Kattupalli in and Sohar in Oman. The three modular fabrication facilities have a combined annual capacity of around 200,000 metric tons for fabrication of large and complex modules.
Recently, Larsen & Toubro started a new integrated manufacturing facility for modules, piping, process skids, and a high-thickness pressure vessels plant in Jubail, Saudi Arabia.
