Kellogg Company has issued a voluntary recall of around 10,000 cases of its Eggo Nutri-Grain Whole Wheat Waffles product in the US as they are possibly contaminated with pathogenic bacteria that cause listeriosis infection.

Listeria monocytogenes or in short Listeria, which is the bacteria that causes this infection, primarily affects the central nervous system.

The bacteria has the potential to cause serious and at times life threatening infections in young children, weak or elderly people along with those having a weak immune system.

Kellogg’s is advising customers who have purchased the affected Eggo Nutri-Grain Whole Wheat Waffles product to discard them without consuming and contact the company for a full refund.

In healthy individuals, Listeria results in symptoms that include high fever, unbearable headache, nausea, abdominal pain, body stiffness and also diarrhea though they last only for a short term.

However, Listeria infection can take a heavy toll on pregnant women with the extent of causing miscarriages and stillbirths.

Kellogg’s said that the Eggo Nutri-Grain Whole Wheat Waffles product recall was issued after a result of routine tests conducted by it identified the possible contamination with Listeria.
