The New South Wales (NSW) government in has approved the AUD 15 million Western Sydney Green Gas Project (WSGG project) proposed by Jemena, which is set to serve as the largest hydrogen demonstration project in Australia.

Jemena said that the Western Sydney Green Gas Project will make use of solar and wind power to produce hydrogen gas through electrolysis. The produced hydrogen gas will be used for cooking, hot water, and heating across the company’s New South Wales gas network.

The hydrogen demonstration project will also assess the application of hydrogen in the transport sector and also the storage capabilities of the New South Wales gas distribution network of Jemena.

Jemena spokesperson Michael Pintabona said that the Western Sydney Green Gas project is the important next step in introducing renewable hydrogen gas into the New South Wales network.

Co-funded by Australia Agency (ARENA), the Western Sydney Green Gas Project will call for the installation of the first electrolyzer in New South Wales, which will take place later this year to produce hydrogen from solar and wind power. The 500kW electrolyzer is expected to produce enough hydrogen gas to power nearly 250 homes.
