Jacobs (NYSE: J) has been selected by Water Corporation, Western Australia’s principal water utility, to design, build, operate, and maintain the Alkimos Seawater Desalination Plant in Perth. This significant project, formed in alliance with Water Corporation and ACCIONA, is poised to bolster Perth’s water supply sustainability. With an investment of approximately $1.83 billion (AUD $2.8 billion), the desalination plant is set to produce an initial capacity of 13 billion gallons (50 billion liters) of drinking water annually, with potential expansion to 26 billion gallons (100 billion liters).
This initiative is a critical component of Water Corporation’s strategy to provide a climate-independent water source for over 2.5 million residents in Western Australia. The desalination plant is designed not only to enhance the region’s water supply but also to meet future demands in a sustainable manner, aligning with global environmental standards and conservation efforts.
The Alkimos Seawater Desalination Plant will feature advanced engineering techniques, including a 2.5-mile (4.1-kilometer) offshore outfall tunnel and a 1.6-mile (2.6-kilometer) clean seawater intake tunnel. Both tunnels, with an inside diameter of approximately 11.3 feet (3.45 meters), will be constructed using tunnel boring machines beneath the seabed, showcasing innovative construction methods in the water management sector.
Jacobs Senior Vice President Keith Lawson expressed enthusiasm about the project, stating, “This appointment strengthens our long-standing relationship with Water Corporation, delivering significant water and wastewater projects in the state.” He also emphasized Jacobs’ expertise in global water solutions and desalination project delivery, highlighting the strategic importance of this partnership.
The Alkimos Seawater Desalination Plant represents a significant step forward in addressing water scarcity and environmental sustainability. By leveraging cutting-edge technology and expertise, Jacobs and its partners are setting a benchmark in the industry for future projects worldwide. This initiative not only secures a reliable water supply for Western Australia but also demonstrates a commitment to innovative solutions and environmental stewardship.
