India’s Torrent Power makes epic move towards green future

Torrent Power, one of ‘s leading integrated power utility companies, has embarked on a pivotal journey towards a greener future with the commencement of work on a Green (GH2) pilot project.

The project involves blending GH2 with natural gas in the (CGD) network. It marks an important milestone in Torrent Power’s foray into the GH2 business in India and represents a significant stride in the country’s shift towards a more sustainable energy mix.

The pilot project, based on Alkaline Electrolyzer technology, is expected to be completed in approximately eight months. The initiative will blend around 2.5% GH2 into the CGD network. GH2 is produced through water electrolysis powered by renewable energy sources.

Blending GH2 with the existing natural gas supply fosters a gradual transition towards cleaner energy sources. This Gorakhpur-based pilot project for Torrent Gas is set to be one of the largest private sector blending initiatives in India.

“Through this initiative, Torrent has taken the first step towards incorporating GH2 in its business operations,” the company states.

Torrent Power, with its robust presence in the Renewable Energy (RE) sector, is poised to become a leading end-to-end GH2 solution provider for industrial and commercial entities in India. The company is also exploring the development of export-oriented green ammonia, showing active interest in multiple states.

Torrent Power boasts an installed power generation capacity of around 4.1GW, predominantly from clean energy sources such as gas (around 2.7GW) and renewables (approximately 1.07GW) encompassing solar and wind power generation.

The company currently has a renewable capacity of around 0.7GW under various stages of development, underscoring its commitment to enhance renewable generation capacity, aligned with the government’s goal to achieve 500GW of non-fossil fuel capacity by 2030.

Torrent Power is also investigating other green energy pathways, including Pumped Hydro Storage and , bolstering its commitment to India’s sustainable future.
