Torrent Power, one of India’s leading integrated power utility companies, has embarked on a pivotal journey towards a greener future with the commencement of work on a Green Hydrogen (GH2) pilot project.

The project involves blending GH2 with natural gas in the city gas distribution (CGD) network. It marks an important milestone in Torrent Power’s foray into the GH2 business in India and represents a significant stride in the country’s shift towards a more sustainable energy mix.

The pilot project, based on Alkaline Electrolyzer technology, is expected to be completed in approximately eight months. The initiative will blend around 2.5% GH2 into the CGD network. GH2 is produced through water electrolysis powered by renewable energy sources.

Blending GH2 with the existing natural gas supply fosters a gradual transition towards cleaner energy sources. This Gorakhpur-based pilot project for Torrent Gas is set to be one of the largest private sector blending initiatives in India.

“Through this initiative, Torrent has taken the first step towards incorporating GH2 in its business operations,” the company states.
