Hyderabad-Eluru bus crash kills six after truck is stranded across NH-65

Six passengers died after a Hyderabad-Eluru bus struck a truck that had stopped partly across NH-65 near Kodad, with investigators examining speed, visibility and road-warning failures.

Six passengers were killed and at least 14 others injured when a private bus travelling from Hyderabad towards Eluru crashed into a truck that had become stranded partly across National Highway 65 near Kodad in Telangana’s Suryapet district early on August 26, 2026.

The bus was carrying about 42 passengers when the collision occurred near Dwarakunta at approximately 5 am. Five of the six people killed were women, while injured passengers were taken to Kodad Government Hospital and other medical facilities in Suryapet and Vijayawada. Early accounts placed the number of injured closer to 20 before authorities refined casualty information as treatment progressed.

Police said preliminary information indicated that the truck had hit the central divider while attempting to overtake another vehicle and came to rest with part of it extending into the carriageway. The passenger bus struck the rear of the truck minutes later, with metal poles or rods being carried by the truck reportedly penetrating sections of the bus during the impact.

What happened before the Hyderabad-Eluru bus struck the truck near Kodad?

Investigators are reconstructing a two-stage accident rather than a simple collision between two normally moving vehicles. Police accounts indicate that the truck encountered trouble first, apparently striking the median while overtaking and becoming immobilised in a position that left part of the vehicle exposed to approaching traffic. The passenger bus then reached the location and hit the truck from behind at substantial force, leaving the front and right side of the bus severely damaged.

That sequence makes the condition of the highway immediately after the truck’s first collision particularly important. Investigators will need to establish whether hazard lights were operating, whether reflective triangles or other warnings had been placed behind the disabled vehicle and how much time elapsed before the bus arrived. Lighting, road geometry and visibility at around 5 am could also have influenced the amount of time available to the bus driver to identify the obstruction.

Speed will inevitably form part of the inquiry because stopping distance increases rapidly at highway velocities, but authorities have not yet established that excessive speed caused the crash. Driver fatigue is another factor normally examined after early-morning long-distance bus accidents, yet it similarly requires evidence rather than inference from the hour at which the collision occurred.

The mechanical condition of both vehicles and electronic records, where available, can help investigators determine how quickly the bus was travelling and whether braking occurred before impact. Witness accounts from surviving passengers and other motorists may also clarify whether the truck was readily visible to approaching traffic.

Why did the collision produce such a severe casualty toll inside the passenger bus?

The physical configuration of the crash appears to have amplified the danger because the bus hit the rear of a heavy commercial vehicle carrying long metal material. Local reports said some of the cargo protruded into the passenger compartment when the vehicles collided, concentrating severe damage along one side of the bus. Several passengers became trapped and had to be removed by emergency teams and motorists who stopped at the scene.

Rear-end crashes involving buses and stationary heavy vehicles can be disproportionately destructive because of differences in height, weight and structural design. A truck trailer or projecting load can penetrate areas above the strongest crash structures of a passenger vehicle, while occupants who are sleeping may have little opportunity to brace before impact. Bus passengers also generally have fewer restraints than occupants of modern private cars, although the exact safety equipment fitted to this vehicle has not yet been established.

The deaths of five women among the six fatalities reflect where passengers happened to be seated rather than evidence of a different safety risk for any particular group. Investigators will examine seating positions and damage patterns as part of determining why some occupants suffered fatal injuries while others survived.

The incident also demonstrates why the period immediately after an initial highway breakdown or collision can be exceptionally dangerous. A vehicle that remains exposed in a high-speed traffic lane can turn one accident into a second, much more serious event before emergency crews have time to arrive.

Could better warning systems have reduced the risk on NH-65?

Highway safety depends on drivers being given enough time and distance to recognise an abnormal obstruction. Commercial vehicles are generally expected to carry reflective warning devices, while hazard lights, road lighting and police response can provide additional protection when a vehicle cannot be moved immediately. Whether all appropriate measures were available or used in this case is one of the questions the investigation must establish.

The Hyderabad-Vijayawada corridor carries heavy passenger, freight and intercity traffic throughout the night. That combination means disabled vehicles need to be detected quickly because buses and trucks can approach at highway speeds when traffic is otherwise relatively light. Road design can reduce risk through shoulders, median protection, lighting and intelligent incident-detection systems, but those safeguards are not equally available across every section of a long national highway.

The collision could therefore trigger scrutiny beyond the conduct of the two drivers. Authorities may need to examine how quickly a stranded heavy vehicle can be reported, whether highway operators receive automated incident alerts and how emergency warnings are provided during the minutes before police or road crews reach the site.

Preventing the first accident remains important, but modern road-safety systems are also designed to stop an initial mistake from escalating into multiple fatalities. The Kodad tragedy will test whether that second layer of protection functioned as intended.

What response has the Telangana government ordered after the Suryapet crash?

Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy expressed condolences to the families of those killed and directed Chief Secretary K. Ramakrishna Rao to ensure appropriate medical care for the injured. Political leaders from several parties also called for stronger highway enforcement and assistance for affected families as the scale of the accident became clear.

The operator of the bus said it was coordinating with authorities and hospitals and prioritising medical assistance and verified information for passengers and their relatives. Any assessment of the operator’s responsibility will depend on the police investigation, including whether the bus, driver schedules and operating practices complied with applicable transport regulations.

The more useful policy response will depend on what investigators actually establish. If fatigue or speed was decisive, enforcement around overnight commercial driving becomes central; if the stranded truck was inadequately marked, emergency-warning practices need greater attention; and if projecting cargo worsened the casualties, load-security and vehicle-design rules may require scrutiny.

Six deaths on one of southern India’s busiest intercity corridors make that determination more than a matter of allocating blame. The investigation has an opportunity to identify which combination of road, vehicle and human safeguards failed before another disabled truck and approaching passenger bus create the same sequence.
