Greater Manchester’s A34 corridor receives £34m boost for major improvements
In a significant move by the UK Department for Transport, nearly £34 million has been allocated to improve the A34 corridor in Greater Manchester. This funding is set to alleviate congestion, enhance connectivity, and generate an estimated £72 million in economic benefits for the region.

Roads Minister, Guy Opperman, marked the start of the project during a visit to Stockport, laying the first spades for the A34 corridor improvement scheme. This project aims to resolve long-standing traffic bottlenecks on the A34, reducing journey times, especially to Manchester Airport, and boosting local economic growth.
Enhancing Road Safety and Supporting Active Travel
A key aspect of the A34 improvements is the creation of a new segregated pedestrian and cycle route along the A34. This initiative not only prioritizes road safety but also promotes active and sustainable travel options for residents.

Part of a Larger Road Improvement Initiative
The A34 corridor improvement is part of a broader £8.3 billion initiative by Network North, which includes a £1.2 billion investment to repair roads across the North West. This effort aims to resurface over 5,000 miles of roads across England, improving journeys for all road users.
Joint Investment and Local Benefits
In addition to the government’s £33.6 million funding, Stockport Council and local third-party funders will contribute nearly £10 million, totaling a £43 million investment in the scheme. The project will enhance access to key business areas and include new pedestrian facilities for local schools.
Construction Phases and Completion Timeline
Construction on the A34 is set to start promptly and will be carried out in phases to minimize disruptions. The entire package of improvements is expected to be completed by spring 2027. This development aligns with the Plan for Drivers, which includes various measures to improve traffic flow and support the rollout of electric vehicle charging.

Local authorities have expressed enthusiasm for the project. Councillor Mark Roberts, Deputy Leader of Stockport Council, highlighted the project’s potential to encourage sustainable transportation and improve traffic flow. Councillor Grace Baynham, Cabinet Member for Highways, Parks and Leisure Services, emphasized the strategic importance of the A34 in the borough and the widespread benefits the investment will bring.
