Gorgon Stage Two Development : Chevron Australia commences gas production
Chevron Australia and the Gorgon joint venture (JV) participants, announced the production of the first gas from the Gorgon Stage Two development located off the northwest coast of Western Australia.
This milestone achievement marks a significant expansion of the existing subsea gas gathering network of the Gorgon Project, the largest single resource project in Australia’s history.
The Gorgon Project has played a vital role in Australia’s energy landscape, exporting liquefied natural gas (LNG) to customers throughout the Asia Pacific region while also supplying domestic gas to the Western Australian market.
The Stage Two development aligns with the original plans for the Gorgon Project, enhancing its capabilities and ensuring a reliable feed gas supply for the gas processing facilities situated on Barrow Island.
As part of the Gorgon Stage Two development, 11 additional wells were installed in the Gorgon and Jansz-Io fields, complemented by offshore production pipelines and subsea structures. These infrastructural advancements will facilitate the efficient extraction and transportation of gas, maintaining the uninterrupted operation of the project.
The Australian subsidiary of Chevron holds an operating stake of 47.3 percent stake in the Gorgon Project, while ExxonMobil and Shell each have a 25 percent share. Other participants include Osaka Gas (1.25 percent), Tokyo Gas (1 percent), and JERA (0.417 percent).
The Gorgon Stage Two development signifies a significant step forward for Australia’s energy industry, strengthening the country’s position as a major LNG exporter and ensuring a stable supply of domestic gas. Chevron Australia and the Gorgon Joint Venture Participants are proud to have reached this crucial production milestone and look forward to continued success in the energy sector.
Mark Hatfield — Chevron Australia managing director said: “The development supports the longevity of the Gorgon Project and the continuation of its already significant ongoing benefits including highly skilled local employment, economic activity as well as state and federal government revenue for decades to come.
“Adding to the initial A$40 billion spend on Australian goods and services from the Gorgon Project since 2009, the development created more than 800 jobs in Western Australia through drilling and completion activities, subsea infrastructure installation and project management.”
