Black Hills Corp. (NYSE: BKH), through its subsidiary Black Hills Colorado Electric, LLC, operating as Black Hills Energy, has unveiled a significant proposal aimed at expanding its renewable energy portfolio in Colorado. The proposal, part of its 2030 Ready Clean Energy Plan, includes the addition of 400 megawatts (MW) of new renewable energy resources, marking a substantial stride towards reducing greenhouse gas emissions and enhancing sustainable energy solutions in the region.

In the detailed 120-Day report submitted to the Colorado Public Utilities Commission, Black Hills Energy outlines a preferred portfolio that incorporates a diverse mix of renewable sources. This includes 200 MW of utility-scale solar, 150 MW of wind, and 50 MW of battery storage. These resources, supported by the company’s existing dispatchable generation assets, are projected to achieve an estimated 89% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by the year 2030.

He further highlighted the company’s commitment to operating one of the cleanest utilities in the state, with a focus on renewable and natural gas generation.

The resource proposal follows a competitive bidding process that took place in late 2023, attracting over 100 bids for resources slated to come online in 2026 and 2027. The final selection and composition of these resources are now pending review and approval by the Colorado Public Utilities Commission, with a decision expected by the end of the year.

This proactive approach by Black Hills Energy to diversify and increase its renewable energy offerings is a significant step towards achieving sustainability and energy independence in Colorado. By focusing on a mix of solar, wind, and battery storage, the company not only aims to reduce its carbon footprint but also ensures a stable, reliable energy supply for the future. If approved, this initiative could serve as a model for other states looking to accelerate their transition to clean energy.
