Adani Total Gas launches green hydrogen pilot project ahead of COP 28

In anticipation of the UN Climate Change Conference (COP 28) in the UAE from 30 November to 12 December 2023, Adani Total Gas Ltd. (ATGL), co-promoted by the Adani Group and TotalEnergies, has announced the start of a groundbreaking ‘Green Hydrogen Production and Blending Pilot Project’. This initiative represents a significant advancement in sustainable energy solutions and is a noteworthy step towards environmental sustainability.

Green Hydrogen Technology and Its Implementation

Adani Total Gas will utilize cutting-edge technology to blend Green Hydrogen (GH2) with natural gas, serving over 4,000 residential and commercial customers in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. GH2, produced through electrolysis of water using electricity from renewable sources, offers a less carbon-intensive alternative to traditional gas while maintaining the same heating capabilities.

Project Timeline and Environmental Impact

Slated for commissioning by Q1 FY24-25, the project aims to gradually increase the green hydrogen blend to up to 8% or more, subject to regulatory approvals. Successful completion of the pilot will lead to a stepwise expansion of hydrogen-blended fuel supply across Ahmedabad and other licensed areas of Adani Total Gas. Studies indicate that an up to 8% hydrogen blend could reduce emissions by up to 4%.
