Wipro has pledged to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2040 in line with the Paris Agreement’s objective to cap temperature increase to 1.5°C.
While unveiling its commitment on Earth Day 2021, the Indian IT services company also gave itself an intermediate target of a reduction of 55% in GHG emissions by the end of this decade in absolute emission levels compared to its base year of 2016-17 (April-March).
As part of the efforts, Wipro will look to boost the energy efficiency of its facilities for reducing their energy consumption in a sustained manner. Via private power purchase agreements and captive solar power, the company will try to increase the use of renewable energy in its owned facilities across India.
The company will also combine behavioral, technological, and collaborative approaches that help cut down the carbon footprint of air travel, commuting, and purchased services and goods.
Thierry Delaporte – CEO and Managing Director of Wipro said: “Wipro has long since built ecological sustainability into its operations, and ways of working. Today we are committing to accelerate our actions to achieve net-zero, and the deep decarbonization efforts required to get there.
“We believe businesses like us have a significant role to play in achieving the global Greenhouse Gas reduction targets.”
Recently, Wipro announced a 27.8% year-over-year increase in its net income for the fourth quarter of the fiscal year 2021 (Q4 FY2021) at $406.4 million. Read more about Wipro Q4 FY2021 results here.
