US Air Force partners with Oklo Inc. for micro-reactor pilot program

The Defense Logistics Agency Energy, acting on behalf of the United States Air Force, has issued a Notice of Intent to Award a groundbreaking contract to Oklo Inc. This partnership aims to fortify national security by ensuring a resilient and clean energy supply at the Eielson Air Force Base through the Air Force’s micro-reactor pilot program.

This announcement marks the beginning of the acquisition process for Oklo Inc., setting the stage for a potential long-term power purchase agreement with the Defense Logistics Agency Energy. If awarded, Oklo will obtain a license for its cutting-edge power plant from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. Following this, the company will construct and operate the power plant, delivering both electricity and steam to the Eielson Air Force Base.

The Air Force micro-reactor pilot program was initiated as a response to the Fiscal Year 2019 National Defense Authorization Act. The Act mandates the Department of Defense to identify potential military locations to construct and operate a micro-reactor as part of its broader strategy to strengthen critical national security infrastructure.

Oklo’s fast reactor design is rooted in proven technology with a strong track record of successful operation. The unique design allows the power plant to operate independently from the grid, offering a clean and dependable power source ideal for domestic military installations critical to national security.
