TotalEnergies introduces AUSEA tech to India in collaboration with Oil India Limited
Oil India Limited (OIL), a Maharatna CPSE under the Government of India, has entered into a significant partnership with global energy giant TotalEnergies to tackle methane emissions at OIL sites across India. Announced on 19th November 2024 during COP29, the collaboration introduces cutting-edge AUSEA technology to the Indian energy sector.
This partnership underscores both companies’ commitment to decarbonization. OIL, a recent signatory to the Oil and Gas Decarbonization Charter (OGDC) launched at COP28, aims to meet ambitious targets of net-zero operations by 2050 and near-zero methane emissions by 2030. TotalEnergies’ AUSEA, an airborne spectrometer system, plays a pivotal role in these efforts, enabling precise detection of methane and carbon dioxide emissions across industrial facilities, including those in hard-to-access regions.
Patrick Pouyanné, Chairman and CEO of TotalEnergies, expressed satisfaction over OIL’s inclusion in their global network of partners. Pouyanné stated that the growing adoption of AUSEA technology highlights the charter’s success in promoting best practices. This collaboration will help OGDC signatories achieve near-zero upstream methane emissions by the 2030 milestone.
For OIL, this partnership aligns with India’s broader energy transition goals. Dr. Ranjit Rath, OIL’s Chairman and Managing Director, emphasized the company’s dedication to reducing its environmental footprint and playing a proactive role in India’s global climate commitments.
TotalEnergies’ AUSEA technology represents a leap in emission measurement, using dual sensors to identify emissions with unparalleled precision. With this tool, both offshore and onshore emission points can be accurately mapped, providing actionable data to mitigate environmental impact.
This alliance also serves as a testament to OIL’s evolving focus on innovation and sustainability. Alongside its efforts in renewable energy and cleaner technologies, OIL has steadily risen as a leading CPSE in India’s upstream oil and gas sector.
India’s Energy Landscape Poised for Change
The strategic collaboration between OIL and TotalEnergies could transform India’s energy sector by enhancing emission reduction capabilities and encouraging other national companies to adopt similar technologies. With TotalEnergies’ international expertise and OIL’s extensive operational footprint in India, the partnership symbolizes a concerted effort toward a greener energy ecosystem.
