TotalEnergies has announced a significant expansion in its lubricant production capabilities through the acquisition of Tecoil, a Finnish leader in the production of Re-Refined Base Oils (RRBOs). This move strategically positions TotalEnergies at the forefront of sustainable lubricant manufacturing, emphasizing its commitment to environmental responsibility and circular economy principles.

Tecoil, operating a facility in Hamina, eastern Finland, has an annual production capacity of 50,000 tons of RRBOs. The company has pioneered an efficient network for collecting used lubricants across Europe, feeding them into its cutting-edge re-refining process. This process transforms used oils into high-quality base oils that rival the properties of new, virgin oils. The result is a sustainable product that meets the growing consumer demand for environmentally friendly lubricants, significantly reducing the carbon footprint of the oils while maintaining high performance standards recognized by leading car manufacturers.

With the integration of Tecoil, TotalEnergies plans to accelerate the use of RRBOs in creating high-end lubricants. Pierre Duhot, Senior Vice-President Lubricants and Specialties at TotalEnergies, expressed enthusiasm for the acquisition: “The integration of Tecoil into TotalEnergies will allow us to accelerate the use of RRBOs in the production of our high-end lubricants to meet our customers’ growing demand for increasingly high-performance, environmentally friendly products. We are delighted to welcome the Tecoil teams and combine their know-how in base oil processing with TotalEnergies’ recognized expertise in the production and distribution of lubricants.”

Juha Kokko, CEO of Tecoil, also remarked on the merger’s potential: “Joining TotalEnergies is a great satisfaction and an opportunity to strengthen and develop the activities of Tecoil. It will allow us to jointly build on our work, knowledge, and development of the lubricant sector and meet the new challenges and ambitions of our customers.”

TotalEnergies, with its 42 lubricant production sites worldwide, has been a significant player in the automotive, industrial, and marine markets. The addition of Tecoil enhances its portfolio, especially following the launch of its first range of lubricants made from premium regenerated base oils in June 2024, including Quartz EV3R for passenger vehicles and Rubia EV3R for trucks. This acquisition underlines TotalEnergies’ leadership in innovation and sustainable product development within the global lubricants market.
