Timi gas field : Sarawak Shell Berhad begins production at Timi platform
Sarawak Shell Berhad (SSB), a subsidiary of Shell plc, has commenced production at its Timi gas field in Malaysia under the SK318 production sharing contract (PSC). Notably, Timi is Shell’s first wellhead platform in Malaysia to utilize a solar and wind hybrid power system. Designed for high efficiency, the unmanned platform is around 60% lighter than conventional platforms that rely on oil and gas for power.
“More Value with Less Emissions,” Says Shell’s Integrated Gas and Upstream Director
“Timi demonstrates we are delivering more value with fewer emissions,” stated Zoe Yujnovich, Shell’s Integrated Gas and Upstream Director. She emphasized the project’s focus on performance, discipline, and simplification, and lauded its contribution to a balanced energy transition for Malaysia.
Peak Production Capacity of the Timi Gas Field and Strategic Location
The Timi platform is designed to produce up to 50,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day at peak gas production. The platform will route its gas through an 80-kilometer pipeline to the F23 production hub, bolstering future growth in the central Luconia area off the coast of Sarawak.
Shell’s Continued Commitment to Malaysia’s Economic and Energy Transition
Shell, with its long-standing history in Malaysia, remains committed to supporting the country’s economic progress and energy transition under the guidance of Malaysia Petroleum Management and PETRONAS. With competitive and resilient investments, including the renewable-energy-powered Timi gas field, Shell aims to contribute significantly to Malaysia’s energy landscape.
Quick Facts About Timi and Shell’s Renewable Initiatives in Malaysia
Timi is a sweet gas field discovered in 2018 under the SK318 PSC. Sarawak Shell Berhad holds a 75% equity stake in the Timi gas field as the operator, with other partners being PETRONAS Carigali Sdn Bhd at 15% and Brunei Energy Exploration at 10%. The Timi platform is strategically located about 252 km northwest of Bintulu, Sarawak, and 202 km northwest of Miri, Sarawak. This follows Shell Malaysia’s earlier success with the Gorek field, its first fully solar-powered wellhead platform, which achieved first gas production in May 2020.
In 2022, Shell Malaysia green-lighted the Rosmari-Marjoram gas project, primarily powered by renewable energy, marking yet another step in their sustainable energy journey in Malaysia.
By starting production from the Timi gas field, Sarawak Shell Berhad and Shell Malaysia are taking meaningful steps in promoting cleaner, more sustainable energy solutions in Malaysia and beyond.
