TGS bags exclusive rights to manage Tanzania’s offshore subsurface data

TGS, a global leader in energy data and intelligence, has entered into an agreement with Tanzania’s Petroleum Upstream Regulatory Authority (PURA) to manage and license over 132,000 square kilometers of the country’s offshore subsurface data. This dataset, crucial for understanding the geological underpinnings of the region, includes comprehensive 2D and 3D seismic data.

Tanzania’s offshore environment is noted for its diverse geological features, with exploration successes spanning from Early Cretaceous to Miocene reservoirs. The extensive seismic and well data available under this agreement will enable in-depth analysis of the basin’s evolution, structural history, and potential hydrocarbon plays. This initiative will support robust trapping configurations, prospect-specific analysis, and mapping, significantly enhancing the understanding of source rock maturity and distribution.

Under the terms of the agreement, TGS holds exclusive rights to license all of Tanzania’s offshore mainland data on behalf of the government. The agreement not only covers existing data but also empowers TGS to undertake new seismic data acquisitions and reprocess existing data. This strategic partnership is expected to bolster Tanzania’s appeal in upcoming licensing rounds scheduled for 2025.

David Hajovsky, EVP of Multi-Client at TGS, remarked on the agreement, “Tanzania remains an attractive exploration target with its world-class gas fields and excellent sands proven across multiple source intervals. By providing access to high-quality seismic data ahead of potential future licensing activities, TGS will empower exploration and production companies to evaluate opportunities in this under-explored but highly promising region of East Africa.”
