Mining’s biggest trucks no longer need drivers, and the economics are starting to show
Autonomous haul trucks are already moving billions of tonnes of iron ore, gold and other materials across some of the world’s largest mines. Rio Tinto, BHP and Fortescue have pushed driverless haulage into large-scale commercial operations, while Komatsu has commissioned its 1,000th ultra-class autonomous truck. The next disruption is moving beyond removing drivers as fleet-management software begins coordinating traffic, equipment utilisation, maintenance and, increasingly, the energy needed to run battery-electric mining fleets.
