Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy has secured a significant contract with the CrossWind Consortium, a joint venture between Shell Netherlands and Eneco, to supply turbines for the 759 MW Hollandse Kust Noord offshore wind park. This project is poised to play a crucial role in the Netherlands’ ambitious renewable energy strategy.
Under the terms of the agreement, Siemens Gamesa will deliver 69 of its SG 11.0-200 DD offshore wind turbines. Additionally, the contract includes a 15-year service and maintenance agreement, ensuring long-term operational efficiency and reliability. The contract is expected to be finalized as a firm order upon meeting planned final conditions in the upcoming months.
The Hollandse Kust Noord Wind Farm Site, located approximately 18.5 km off the North Holland coast, represents the third subsidy-free offshore wind project in the Dutch national strategy. The project not only marks the first collaboration between Siemens Gamesa and Shell but also continues a growing partnership with Eneco, following another offshore venture.
In December 2020, the Dutch authorities granted CrossWind the irrevocable permit, enabling the formal signing of the Notice to Proceed. The parent companies of CrossWind, Shell (79.9%) and Eneco (20.1%), have already committed to the project with the Final Investment Decision.
Marc Becker, CEO of the Siemens Gamesa Offshore Business Unit, expressed enthusiasm about the project’s potential: “As our first project with Shell and our second offshore project with Eneco, we’re extremely excited to grow our partnership with both companies through Hollandse Kust Noord. Siemens Gamesa is at the forefront of delivering solutions that contribute to decarbonizing the power sector, and simultaneously aid in securing a green recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic. We are happy to lend our expertise in offshore wind and help The Netherlands achieve zero greenhouse gas emissions from their energy supply by 2050. The long-term Service agreement also ensures direct economic benefits for years to come.”
Construction on Hollandse Kust Noord is slated to begin in 2023, with turbine commissioning expected to be completed within the same year. The wind farm is projected to generate renewable energy sufficient to meet the energy needs of 1 million Dutch households, significantly contributing to the country’s energy transition goals.
Tjalling de Bruin, CEO of CrossWind, also noted the project’s importance: “We are looking forward to continuing this partnership to deliver the offshore wind park at Hollandse Kust Noord in The Netherlands. With contracts in place, the final investment decision taken, and turbines instated with the latest technologies, we will be able to deliver clean energy by 2023.”
The Netherlands has plans to establish six offshore wind zones between 2015 and 2030, aiming for carbon neutrality and addressing climate challenges effectively. Siemens Gamesa’s turbines will play a critical role in this endeavor, being installed exclusively at Hollandse Kust Zuid and Hollandse Kust Noord, and co-installed at Borssele.
