RWE and Nordex forge major wind turbine supply deal to boost European renewable energy sector
In a landmark agreement that underscores the growing momentum of the renewable energy sector in Europe, RWE Renewables and the Nordex Group have announced a multi-year contract for the supply of wind turbines, totaling a capacity of 800 megawatts (MW). This significant deal, unveiled at the WindEurope conference in Bilbao, marks a pivotal step towards bolstering European energy security and advancing the energy transition. Over the next two and a half years, RWE plans to enhance its onshore wind sector by acquiring approximately 120 wind turbines from Nordex, a testament to their long-standing collaborative relationship.
Under the leadership of Katja Wünschel, CEO of RWE Renewables Europe & Australia, the company has set an ambitious target to increase its installed capacity in the onshore wind sector from the current 8.6 gigawatts to 14 gigawatts by 2030. This strategic move aims to secure RWE’s position as a key player in Europe’s renewable energy landscape, strengthening its supply chain through long-term planning and partnerships with reliable suppliers like Nordex. Wünschel highlighted the importance of this supply agreement, stating, “This supply agreement with Nordex optimally complements existing contracts and secures additional capacity for us to achieve our ambitious growth targets.”
José Luis Blanco, CEO of the Nordex Group, expressed enthusiasm for the continued collaboration with RWE, emphasizing a shared commitment to driving the energy transition forward. Through their joint efforts, both companies aim to make a significant contribution to Europe’s energy security, building on a history of successful projects and a shared vision for a sustainable energy future.
The agreement features the procurement of Nordex’s N163 turbine model, renowned for its flexible rated output of up to 6.8 MW, along with the N175 (up to 6.8 MW) and N149 (up to 5.9 MW) models, adaptable to RWE’s core markets across Europe. Furthermore, the two companies have committed to a multi-year service agreement, ensuring the maintenance and servicing of the onshore wind farms, although the financial specifics of the deal remain confidential.
