Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed a vehement reaction to the deployment of Polish troops at the eastern border. Putin emphasized Russia’s commitment to using all available means to defend Belarus, following concerns raised by Poland and other European Union (EU) countries over Russian paramilitaries deployed near their borders.
Reports suggest that Russian mercenaries from the Wagner group have initiated training sessions for Belarusian troops at the Bretsky training centre, which is situated approximately 10 km from a Polish border crossing. Residents near the border have reportedly heard gunshots and helicopters, raising alarm.
In a series of harsh remarks, Putin suggested that Poland had intentions to invade Belarus, which is an ally of Russia, and accused Polish elites of coveting Belarusian lands. These comments were made during a security council meeting in Moscow. Putin condemned Poland’s actions, indicating that any aggression towards Belarus would be considered an attack on Russia and would be met with a comprehensive response. Furthermore, Putin pointed out that the western territories of current Poland were a gift from Stalin and threatened a reminder to Warsaw.
Poland, alarmed by the developments in the border area, is reinforcing its security measures. The Polish security committee announced plans to relocate troops eastward in response to the newly established presence of the Wagner group in Belarus. This move was labelled a “provocation” by Polish security official Zbigniew Hoffmann.
Tensions are ratcheting up in the region, as the Wagner group’s training of the Belarusian army forms part of a deal between the mercenary fighters and Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko. Reports indicate a significant influx of Wagner fighters in Belarus, following a short-lived mutiny in Russia led by their commander, Yevgeny Prigozhin. These unfolding events are further escalating the geopolitical climate in the vicinity of Russia and Ukraine.
