PM Modi accuses Congress of undermining India’s Constitutional democracy over decades

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in a highly charged address to the Lok Sabha, accused the Indian National Congress of systematically undermining India’s Constitution over the past decades. Speaking during a debate commemorating 75 years of the Constitution’s adoption, the Prime Minister highlighted key moments, including the Emergency and repeated constitutional amendments, which he claimed tarnished the principles of India’s democracy.

The speech focused on contrasting the vision of the Constitution’s framers with the actions of successive Congress governments. Modi argued that the Constitution’s commitment to unity in diversity was often disregarded, resulting in policies and decisions that damaged India’s democratic framework.

How Congress Shaped the Emergency Legacy

The Prime Minister described the Emergency declared by Indira Gandhi in 1975 as one of the darkest periods in Indian history. He accused Congress of disregarding fundamental rights, curtailing press freedoms, and turning the country into a “prison.”

“The Emergency is a permanent stain on India’s constitutional democracy,” Modi asserted. He explained how constitutional provisions were suspended, and citizens’ rights were trampled to consolidate political power. This, he said, remains a glaring example of how democratic values were undermined by the Congress.

The Prime Minister also pointed to the frequent use of constitutional amendments by Congress leaders, starting with Jawaharlal Nehru’s government, to suppress dissent and advance their agenda. He claimed that the Congress had amended the Constitution 75 times over six decades, creating a dangerous precedent.

Why Article 370 Removal Was Key to Unity

Highlighting his government’s achievements, Modi underlined the abrogation of Article 370, which granted special status to Jammu and Kashmir, as a milestone in uniting the nation. He argued that Article 370 had long been a barrier to India’s unity and development, and its removal marked a significant step in fulfilling the Constitution’s vision.

“By removing Article 370, our government ensured that every citizen of Jammu and Kashmir is treated equally under the same laws, fostering real unity in diversity,” Modi stated.

The Role of Constitutional Democracy in Empowering Marginalised Groups

The Prime Minister praised India’s Constitution for granting universal suffrage from the outset, contrasting this with other nations that took decades to provide voting rights to women. “Our Constitution is rooted in equality,” he noted, adding that his government’s policies are designed to reflect this principle by prioritising inclusive development policies for underserved communities.

Modi highlighted his administration’s philosophy of “Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas,” asserting that his government works to uplift those neglected for decades. He framed this approach as a fulfilment of the Constitution’s promise, differentiating it from the alleged nepotism-driven politics of Congress.

Is Nepotism in Politics Hindering Progress?

The Prime Minister did not shy away from criticising Congress for fostering dynastic politics. He accused the Nehru-Gandhi family of undermining democratic principles for personal power, citing examples such as Sonia Gandhi’s influence over then-Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Rahul Gandhi’s public dismissal of ordinances passed by Singh’s cabinet.

“The habit of disrespecting the Constitution began with Nehru, intensified during the Emergency, and continues with the current generation of the Gandhi family,” Modi said, emphasising the need for Indian politics to move away from nepotism.

What Is India’s Path Forward?

As India reflects on 75 years of its Constitution, Modi proposed reforms to uphold democratic principles and ensure equitable development. Among his 11 proposals were safeguarding reservations for marginalised communities, resisting religiously-based reservations, and eradicating nepotism from Indian politics.

The Prime Minister called for renewed commitment to the Constitution’s vision of unity in diversity, urging all lawmakers to prioritise national interests over personal or party gains.

Modi also highlighted the critical role of the Constitution in empowering leaders from humble backgrounds like himself, reinforcing his belief in its ability to uphold democracy and equality.

Congress’ Emergency Legacy And Beyond

The Prime Minister concluded his remarks with a stern reminder of Congress’ legacy, stating that its actions during the Emergency and repeated constitutional amendments have left a lasting blemish on India’s democratic record. He called on all political parties to learn from history and work towards preserving the spirit of constitutional democracy.

“India’s Constitution is not just a document; it is the foundation of our unity, equality, and progress. It must be protected from those who seek to undermine it for their benefit,” Modi declared, closing his address with a vision of an inclusive and empowered India.
