Asif Merchant, a Pakistani national with suspected ties to Iran, has been charged with plotting the assassination of former President Donald Trump and other high-profile public officials. Merchant, 46, reportedly arrived in the United States from Pakistan after spending time in Iran. His intention was to recruit hitmen to execute the assassination plot, according to the detention memo. Merchant’s arrest on July 12, just before Trump’s rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, where Trump was shot in the ear, marks a significant development in the ongoing investigation.
