Nokia and Zain Iraq partner for network upgrade with microwave technology

Nokia has announced a strategic partnership with Zain Iraq aimed at significantly upgrading the telecom operator’s network in the south of Iraq. The three-year deal focuses on expanding network capacity and modernising infrastructure using Nokia’s advanced microwave technology. This deployment comes as Zain Iraq faces increased demand for data services, necessitating infrastructure expansion to maintain service quality.

Zain Iraq has been experiencing surging demand for data, driven by rising customer usage, which puts pressure on the existing network. Nokia will implement its latest microwave technology, including the advanced E-band solutions, to improve network capacity and prepare for the growing data needs. This project will not only upgrade the microwave backbone of Zain Iraq’s network but also optimise network performance and scalability to handle future growth.

The deployment, which begins immediately, aims to enhance customer experience and provide reliable network performance. Central to the upgrade is Nokia’s high-capacity UBT-T XP version, known for having the highest transmit power in the market. This technology allows for reduced antenna sizes, minimising the load on towers, which translates into both CAPEX and OPEX savings for Zain Iraq. Additionally, Nokia’s solution will replace equipment from other suppliers, positioning the telecom giant as a key player in Iraq’s network evolution.

Mikko Lavanti, Senior Vice President of Mobile Networks at Nokia Middle East and Africa, noted that this deal highlights Nokia’s local expertise and capabilities in delivering cutting-edge microwave solutions. He said that the partnership would help Zain Iraq address its current challenges and prepare for future network demands. He also emphasised that Nokia’s technology would ensure that Zain Iraq’s network is capable of scaling to meet the needs of an expanding customer base.

This development marks Nokia’s first entry into Zain Iraq’s microwave business, bringing about a significant step forward in Iraq’s telecommunications landscape.
