Markel Canada launches ‘Markel Play’: A new insurance offering for sports sector

Markel Canada, a division of the London-based casualty insurer Markel International and a subsidiary of Markel Group (NYSE: MKL), has officially introduced ‘Markel Play’, a bespoke insurance product designed specifically for the sports, fitness, and recreation sectors. This launch marks a significant enhancement in the company’s portfolio, leveraging decades of specialty insurance expertise to offer comprehensive coverage tailored to the unique needs of sports organizations and participants.

‘Markel Play’ encompasses a wide range of coverage options including general liability, abuse liability, property, business interruption, instructor’s errors and omissions, and participant accident insurance. This extensive protection package addresses the complex risks associated with sports and recreational activities, ensuring that organizations and individuals can operate with greater security and peace of mind.

To further refine its insurance offerings, Markel Canada has established strategic partnerships with Sport Law and the Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport. These collaborations have equipped Markel with deep insights into the specific challenges and risks faced by amateur sports organizations and athletes, enabling the company to design more effective and targeted insurance solutions.

As part of its commitment to providing value-added services, Markel Canada offers policyholders access to the Sport Law Safe Sport Policy Suite. This includes assistance with Safe Sport policy implementation, waiver review, and recommendations. Additionally, clients can benefit from up to two hours of bespoke risk management support and secure up to 10 spaces in an online training course titled ‘Governance Essentials’ delivered by the Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport.

Brenda McClung, Assistant Vice President of Markel Play, emphasized the company’s dedication to understanding and meeting client needs, a core aspect of Markel’s client-centric approach. “The official launch of Markel Play is not just about bringing a new product to market, but it also encapsulates our ongoing effort to lead and innovate within the sports insurance space,” McClung stated.

Markel has solidified its position in the sports insurance market notably after the acquisition of Allsport Insurance Marketing Ltd in 2017. This strategic move enhanced Markel’s underwriting capabilities and technical expertise, further strengthening its sports insurance offerings.

With the launch of ‘Markel Play’, Markel Canada is poised to set new standards in sports-related insurance, combining comprehensive coverage with expert-led services and support. This initiative is expected to foster safer sports environments and promote sustainable practices within the industry, reinforcing Markel’s leadership in the specialty insurance sector.
