Jindal Stainless powers India’s first underwater metro line in Kolkata
Jindal Stainless, India’s leading stainless steel manufacturer, has significantly contributed to the development of India’s first underwater metro line in Kolkata, a project inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This groundbreaking venture, valued at INR ₹4,965 crore, marks a significant milestone in the country’s infrastructure capabilities, enhancing connectivity and setting a new standard in urban transportation. The underwater metro segment, spanning 4.8 kilometers from Esplanade to Howrah Maidan on the Green Line, will traverse under the river Hooghly in just 45 seconds, connecting Howrah Maidan to Salt Lake Sector V, West Bengal’s prominent IT hub.
For this project, Jindal Stainless has supplied SS 301LN, a superior austenitic grade of stainless steel known for its corrosion resistance and durability. This choice of material underscores the company’s commitment to sustainable infrastructure development, offering a cost-effective solution over the long term due to its minimal maintenance requirements. The use of stainless steel in the Kolkata Metro’s construction not only enhances the project’s longevity but also supports the government’s vision of transforming urban mobility.

The Kolkata metro project includes the country’s deepest metro station at Howrah, situated 33 meters below ground level, with the tunnel itself lying 32 meters below the water’s surface. This engineering marvel sets a precedent for future infrastructure projects across India, emphasizing the role of innovative materials and technologies in developing state-of-the-art transportation solutions.
Jindal Stainless has a history of contributing to major infrastructure projects, including the supply of stainless steel 301LN for the Meerut metro trainsets, part of India’s first Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS). The Meerut metro, designed to be India’s fastest with a speed of 120 kmph, exemplifies the company’s dedication to enhancing India’s urban landscape through advanced materials and technology.
