IndianOil awards another contract to McDermott for Barauni Refinery Expansion Project

The Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IndianOil or IOCL) has awarded a contract pertaining to the Barauni Refinery Expansion Project in Bihar to McDermott International.

The contract is for the engineering, procurement, construction (EPC) and commissioning of a new naptha hydrotreating plant and a new isomerization plant with related facilities.

Commenting on the Barauni Refinery Expansion Project contract, Mahesh Swaminathan — McDermott International Senior Vice President, Asia Pacific said: “We welcome the opportunity to work on the expansion of the Barauni Refinery.

“Evolving the configuration will maximize output, ensure compliance with stringent emissions and quality standards and help meet the increasing energy requirements of India’s domestic market.”

According to McDermott International, the naptha hydrotreating plant and the isomerization plant will treat heavy naptha streams by filtering out sulphur, nitrogen and metal compounds for producing Bharat Stage-6 compliant gasoline.

The US-based engineering and construction solutions provider will execute the contract from its Gurgaon office in India with backing from teams in Brno in Czech Republic and Perth, Australia.

McDermott International stated: “The scope covers project management, residual process design, detailed engineering, procurement, fabrication, inspection, transportation, installation, construction and all processes through to mechanical completion and commissioning.”

The contract work will begin in Q3 2021, which adds to the order received from IndianOil in June 2021 as part of the Barauni Refinery Expansion Project. Under the earlier EPCC contract, McDermott International will be responsible for a new diesel hydrotreating unit and associated facilities.

Neeraj Agrawal — McDermott Country Manager, India, commenting on the Barauni Refinery Expansion Project contract, said: “This is our second award for the Barauni Refinery Expansion Project, which will bring great synergies for the scopes throughout project execution.
