Hendler Family Brewing acquires Wormtown Brewery: A major shift in Massachusetts brewing industry
In a significant move within the craft brewing industry, Jack’s Abby Craft Lagers, owned by brothers Jack, Eric, and Sam Hendler, has officially announced the acquisition of Worcester-based Wormtown Brewery. This strategic purchase positions the newly formed Hendler Family Brewing Company among the top ten largest family-owned craft breweries in the United States. The Hendler Family Brewing Company will now encompass the Jack’s Abby Craft Lagers, Wormtown Brewery brands, and Jack’s Beverage Co., its contract brewing arm.
Sam Hendler, CEO and co-founder of Jack’s Abby Craft Lagers, highlighted the challenges faced by the industry, stating, “The pandemic put unimaginable pressures onto Massachusetts breweries which have been compounded by the ensuing supply chain instability, record high inflation, employee shortages, and a ton of other challenges for small to midsize brewers.” He further expressed excitement about preserving the legacy of Wormtown Brewery, particularly its flagship product, Be Hoppy IPA.
The acquisition not only expands Jack’s Abby’s production capacity to 110,000 barrels annually but also increases its workforce to over 200 employees, thereby making it the largest craft brewing facility in Massachusetts. The corporate headquarters will continue to operate out of Framingham, and the majority of Wormtown’s non-ownership staff are being offered roles within the new structure.
David Fields, representing Wormtown Brewery’s ownership group, reflected on the company’s journey, “Our brewery has been on one helluva ride over the past 14 years… I am certain that in the Hendler Family we have found the perfect stewards for our beer, our people, and our commitment to the city of Worcester.” This sentiment underscores the commitment to continuity and community engagement that both companies share.
Wormtown Brewery, established in 2010, will maintain its presence in Worcester and Foxborough, ensuring that the cherished local brand continues to thrive under new management. The transition is expected to be finalized by early summer 2024, pending necessary licensing approvals.
This acquisition is a testament to the resilience and strategic thinking necessary to thrive in the competitive craft beer market. By consolidating resources and brands, the Hendler Family Brewing Company not only secures its market position but also enhances its operational capabilities, setting a precedent for future industry consolidations.
