Haydale receives Welsh govt grant for Graphene heat transfer project

Haydale (AIM: HAYD), a global technology solutions company, has announced a significant milestone in receiving the SMART Flexible Innovation Support Grant (SMART FIS) from the Welsh Government. This grant, aimed at accelerating the development of graphene-infused heat transfer fluids, represents a major step forward in scientific innovation within a commercial setting.

Collaboration Between Haydale and Hydratech

In this project, Haydale is partnering with Hydratech, a division of Liquitherm Technologies Group and a long-established manufacturer of aqueous-based heat transfer fluids. Together, they aim to infuse Hydratech’s fluids with Haydale’s functionalised graphene. The collaboration is anticipated to maximise thermal conductivity and diffusivity, thereby enhancing the efficiency of fluid-based heating and cooling systems significantly.

Potential Impact of Graphene-Infused Fluids on Heating Systems

The development of these graphene-infused fluids, termed Fluidstate Superthermal Conductors (FSCs), is expected to benefit key sectors, particularly those using domestic and commercial heat pumps. The technology could increase the Coefficients of Performance of heat pumps, leading to reduced running costs and significant cuts in greenhouse emissions, particularly for domestic households.

Advancing Wales’ Innovation Strategy and Net Zero Goals

This SMART FIS funding, part of a new innovation strategy for Wales, supports Welsh industry through increased investment in research, development, and innovation. The project, totaling £147,221 with a grant value of £73,610 shared between Haydale and Hydratech, aligns with the broader goal of achieving Net Zero CO2 emissions by 2050. Stephen Hickson, MD of Hydratech, expressed excitement over the partnership with Haydale, noting the potential widespread impact on various users. Keith Broadbent, CEO of Haydale, acknowledged the grant’s role in accelerating their technology, especially in energy-efficient heating innovations.
