Haldwani recovery underway: Authorities arrest 30, schools to resume amid continued vigilance

In the wake of the violence that erupted in Haldwani, Uttarakhand last Thursday, the city is cautiously stepping towards a semblance of normalcy. Authorities have confirmed the arrest of thirty individuals connected to the unrest, underlining the government’s commitment to restoring order and safety within the district. Despite the tension, educational institutions across Haldwani are set to resume classes, signaling a move towards regularity, with the exception of the riot-hit area of Vanbhulpura where schools will remain shut and a curfew firmly enforced.

The district of Haldwani remains enveloped in a security blanket, with a platoon of paramilitary forces already dispatched to the site and four additional units expected to arrive shortly. The violence, which led to the tragic loss of five lives and left more than 250 individuals injured, was sparked by the demolition of an illegal madrasa and a designated space for namaz in Malik’s Garden by the local municipal corporation, acting on a court order. The operation faced fierce resistance from local residents, culminating in widespread protests, stone-throwing incidents, and the arson of municipal property, including four JCB machines. The chaos also resulted in injuries to approximately 50 police officers, several administration officials, protesters, and journalists.

In response to the escalating violence, the city was swiftly placed under curfew, with shoot-at-sight orders issued against participants in the riots and a complete shutdown of internet services to curb the spread of misinformation. The aftermath has seen a significant migration from the area, leaving many homes deserted.

The chief accused, Abdul Malik, believed to be the proprietor of the demolished structure, remains at large, with law enforcement expressing confidence in his imminent apprehension. Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has publicly affirmed a stringent approach towards those implicated in the riots, emphasizing the ongoing arrests of rioters and the continuation of the campaign against illegal constructions.
