In a startling health development, Japan is experiencing a rapid surge in influenza cases, with reports indicating nearly 166,690 flu patients across about 5,000 medical facilities, averaging 33.72 people per facility. This alarming situation, marked as the fastest increase in a decade, has prompted the central government to declare a warning level for flu cases nationwide.

The Ministry of Health, Labour, and Welfare reported that the average of 33.72 patients per facility has exceeded the critical warning level of 30. The National Institute of Infectious Diseases estimated a staggering total of approximately 1,118,000 flu patients nationwide in the same period. This surge in flu cases is concerning and unusual, occurring a month earlier than typical flu seasons.

Health experts are attributing this rapid increase in flu cases to lowered immunity against the influenza virus. During the COVID-19 lockdowns and social distancing measures, people had reduced exposure to common pathogens, which, while effective in controlling COVID-19 spread, might have led to a decreased stimulation of the immune system against other pathogens like the flu virus.

In a bid to curb the outbreak, the Ministry of Health has mandated closures for 6,382 educational facilities nationwide in the week leading up to Sunday (Dec 17). This step is part of the government’s efforts to prevent further spread of the flu and safeguard public health as the nation grapples with this dual health threat. The situation in Japan serves as a critical reminder of the ongoing challenges in managing public health in the post-pandemic era.
