Flood apocalypse in Dubai! Roads submerged and flights grounded yet again!

Just weeks after experiencing a record-breaking storm, the UAE faced another severe weather challenge with heavy rains leading to flooded roads and significant disruptions. On Thursday, officials issued an orange alert, signaling serious weather conditions that prompted school and office closures across the nation.

Flight Disruptions at Dubai International Airport

Dubai International Airport, one of the world’s busiest, felt the immediate impact of the adverse weather, with 13 flights cancelled—including nine arrivals and four departures. Additionally, five inbound flights had to be diverted. These disruptions underline the intensity of the storm that hit the Gulf country less than a month after the last severe downpour.

Emergency Measures and Public Safety Warnings

The National Emergency Crisis and Disaster Management Authority (NCEMA) enhanced their readiness on Wednesday, in anticipation of the forecasted severe weather. Despite these preparations, the rains on Thursday were intense but less severe than the previous month’s deluge. Nonetheless, officials urged the public to exercise caution, particularly avoiding typically bustling areas like Dubai’s six-lane highways, which saw reduced traffic and abandoned vehicles due to the flooding.

Weather Forecast and Continued Impact

The National Centre of Meteorology reported that the heavy rains began around midnight, with additional severe weather including lightning and hail expected to continue into Friday. The Ministry of Interior, coordinating with NCEMA, has closed roads leading to flood-prone areas to prevent accidents and ensure public safety.

A Pattern of Increasing Weather Extremes

This recent weather event in the UAE may be indicative of a broader pattern of more frequent and intense weather extremes. Such incidents pose significant challenges to infrastructure, emergency services, and the daily lives of residents, requiring enhanced preparedness and adaptive measures.
